Does anyone know how good the University of Iowa is for pre-med students? Any help will be appreciated!

bumping...

Anyone? Come on guys...

Any undergraduate university that has the pre-med required courses, access to local hospitals for volunteering/shadowing, and opportunities for research and campus/community involvement, will be more than okay for any aspiring pre-meds. Given that Carver is a great medical school is an added bonus. I go to medical school in a neighboring state and have a good friend in my class who went to Iowa, and he's got a lot of passion for his alma mater.

Awesome! I like UIowa, but if I go there they would have to have a really good premed program (trying to decide between USC and UIowa, and yes, I know how sweet USC is, but UIowa is cheap and I think if it is comparable for premed, then I think I would choose UIowa).

I'm sure it's fine, but you might have better options depending on the strength of your application.

I will be applying early entrance, meaning I would leave during my senior year of HS for college (only UIowa and USC offer these types of programs to me)
If UIowa doesn't have a good premed program, I guess I could wait until senior year to apply to other colleges, but I would prefer to go ASAP

As much as it pains me to say, being an Iowa State student, Iowa does have a good pre-med program. The med school is highly respected in the midwest (I've lived here my whole life) and a few friends from high school are taking the pre-med route along with the standard major courses at UIowa and they seem to be enjoying it and having a good time.

UI is a big party school, so if you're not into that, be aware. Sports are huge, the j-school is pretty good from what I've heard, and they're known for their med school and hospital in the state.

^ Good to hear. Why does it pain you to say this?
Also, not a big party person, but I like the idea of a big 10 school :)
How are the sports?

mini bump. ;)

bigger bump

I go to Iowa State. I avoid all things Hawkeye whenever possible. Growing up here my whole life and dealing with UI fans as an ISU fan, it's hard to compliment the school I've never had any desire to attend--not just because of sports, but also because ISU's program in my major was/is stronger than the one at UI.

But really, it's a good school. In the Big 10 I'd put Northwestern, UWisc, UIllinois, UMichigan, Penn State, Ohio State, and UMinnesota above Iowa as far as academics are concerned. Sports are alright, their football program is struggling a little bit (on field and off--something like 20 football players were arrested or cited for various crimes in the last 14 months), and their wrestling team won the NCAA championships this year.

I thought I'd also mention that Iowa City is currently flooded and getting worse, but that applies to pretty much the entire state of Iowa :(

^ Thanks for the info (Michigan is flooding too by the way).
I know what you mean, being an ISU fan and attending IU (I'm an MSU fan and would loathe going to U of M sporting events).
Good luck with your studies, and thanks for the response!

smartcookie, iowa is a big ten school of course the sports are going to be good. I actually live in Ames as well but will never want to attend Iowa State. From what I hear from my counselor is that Iowa's honors program is very good and yes its a pretty big party school

I guess I can live with a party school, though I won't partake in the parties all too often. Good to hear that their honors program is reputable, as if I was accepted into NAASE I would be inducted into the honors program.
