I’m on a small mission to document my decisions to help other students in the future.

Accepted EA. There was no email or anything. Not even a letter. Just a little check mark under the “Decision” box.

3.6/4.0. Large upward trend.

Submitted a 1260 (later took it again and scored a 1300, but it was too late to submit that).

Yes, it was a complete safety, but I think UMaine is a solid school—and there’s nowhere to go but up. I’ll be watching UMaine’s progress!

We are very impressed with UMaine. Completely agree - a solid school with SO much to offer! I have been surprised how little discussion there is about it here on CC.

Beautiful, friendly, campus with lots of history and plenty to do.

The Nursing program is one of my daughter’s top choices (accepted EA).

U Maine is a late addition to my daughters list. She applied and was just accepted. I’m curious what you were impressed with since we have been unable to visit. So far U Vermont is high on her list. Biochem major and would be in the honors college.

My daughter has actually committed to UMaine!
Very impressed with the campus, facilities, support.
Ask me anything! We’ve been there twice. Summer and 2 weeks go.

What we liked:
Great nursing program, first and foremost.
The campus is laid out beautifully, very walk-able. Nice outdoor spaces.
Orono = cute little town.
The academic support network for students seems excellent.
Good communication already.
The D1 Athletic facilities are amazing, lots of games and events for spectators. Plus the gym and facilities for everyone else are top notch, as well.
Proximity to Bangor (shopping/hotels/restaurants/airport)

Hope that helps!

We were pleasantly surprised on a visit to UMaine. My S22 applied pre-visit as an affordable safety. The campus and facilities were nice, admittedly pretty rural, but he views that as a positive for outdoor activities (and Bangor is not all that far if something is needed). Faculty that he emailed were very willing to meet and take time to answer questions. They also seem to have pretty good undergrad research opportunities. They have admitted student days coming up we will probably go back for a second visit.

Hi all! For those who have visited, any lodging rec’s? We are headed there for an admitted students day for their school of engineering. I have a room reserved at Black Bear Lodge. Looks nice enough but was wondering about other lodging in the area. Our final college visit before he makes his decision. May 1 is fast approaching…

Hi,
We opted to stay in Bangor the few times we went.
Hampton Inn is probably physically closest to Orono, and it is quite new and clean.
We’ve also used the Residence Inn, closer to downtown and many restaurants.
Both good! There are many others throughout Bangor as well.

We are going to accepted students day on 4/22!
Best wishes and keep up posted!

Thank you! We will be there on the 22nd as well.

Any National Merit Finalists/Semifinalists out there considering U. Maine? We are visiting on the 22nd. Other top choices are Penn State and U Vermont, both far more expensive. I’m just worried about the caliber of the classes and research opportunities. The distance would be very far, but scholarship would buy a lot of plane tix…

My son is very seriously considering it, re-visiting in a couple of weeks to make a final decision. It seems that, at least in some fields, there are research opportunities, and the professors might even be more accessible than at some higher ranked schools.
I am a little concerned about it’s rep as a party school, but it’s something he’ll have to deal with anywhere somewhat.
We gave my son a budget, which basically allows for SUNY schools or someplace with a lot of merit. It’s up to him.

Same situation here! With very generous merit, UMaine is as affordable as a SUNY school.

Nursing, like many other ultra-selective majors, is incredibly competitive anywhere. She had several excellent choices, but UMaine literally checks all the boxes for her- direct admit into a nurturing and supportive academic program, medium size U, tons of outdoor activities, sports, etc. She has been invited to the Honors program, but not sure she wants to commit to it.

She’s really happy with her choice, has already connected with many students, and found a roommate. For us, the distance…it’s far from home… but no different than going to a school way upstate.

My D22, National Merit Finalist, is seriously considering UMaine (It’s on the short list with Oklahoma State)

She’s accepted into Chem Engineering (although not 100% sure which ENG she wants to major in.)
We visited over the winter to try for an accurate picture of the weather most of the school year… Uh, yeah. The snow appeals as a novelty (we live in SC) but I fear it would wear off after a couple of semesters.
We were very impressed with the leadership we met, and toured with.
(Enhanced Engineering tour, Campus Tour and Honors tour)
We feel the same as far as faculty/ seemingly very accessible
and YES,
affordability is super important to D22.
(Education budget leftover after undergrad =very attractive)
Same concerns about long nights stuck indoors.
She’s not a party kid (yet?? eek!)
I like to think she’d take advantage of that amazing rec center (open until 11p on weeknights) but … hard to tell if that could be a realistic expectation with a challenging course load and
if it requires a long trek through ice after dark. (Sun sets at 4 pm in the winter)
There are Pros and Cons everywhere: trying to figure out the priorities and best value.
Seems like there are a LOT of active outdoorsy clubs/ but so difficult to tell.
All colleges show that on their own websites.

Let me know what she decides. My older daughter is in engineering at CSM. My D22 is surrounded by engineers and wants nothing to do with that (for now) but you never know. We visit on the 22nd but down to the final 2. She isn’t a partier.

How did the Maine visit go? Any decisions?

I know that decision day is upon us, so too late for 2022 support, but for future researchers, I’ll delve in, as personal experiences on this forum have been very helpful to my family during both kids’ application cycles.

D22 has finally decided …
We visited Oklahoma State over spring break,
and she has chosen to go there instead of U Maine.

(If anyone is wondering how she narrowed the list down to two such different regions/universities, both schools offer very generous scholarships to National Merit Finalists,
And both have strong Engineering departments and Honors Colleges.)

Honestly, both felt like solid programs with supportive faculty.

In general, Oklahoma State felt a notch above UM campus-wide.
OSU is a larger institution, so it stands to reason that there would be more resources.

Other considerations:
U Maine is on the cusp of refurbishing their athletic facilities, which is fantastic,
but there will be a lot of construction going on over the next decade and I think that could impact quality of life on campus.

U Maine-rural felt very different from OK State-rural. Stillwater is a little town, but it does abut the campus directly allowing for a stroll into town, whereas Orono is teeny, and requires a bus ride (Probably could ride a bike in when it wasn’t too icy…)

Engineering and Honors programs at OSU dovetail nicely, and both seem to offer excellent communities and support.
Maine’s honors program was also impressive, but felt like more of a structured entity of it’s own, versus collaborative with the other colleges. Not a bad thing, just different, and the greater flexibility is a better fit for D22.

We don’t place too much emphasis on rankings, but Oklahoma State does earn higher marks than UM across the board.

And then there’s climate…

Thanks to all who’ve shared their intel and experiences

Thank you for sharing all the details that went into your decision.

We are looking at Maine due to the Flagship Match; not NMF.

I’m concerned about athletic facilities being unavailable with construction going on if it might not be realistic to be active outdoors in the evenings during the winters. Do you have any details about what facilities might not be accessible? It might be something I can call and ask about because it seems important in terms of quality of life for a person who likes to be active, not to mention the impact on mental health in the dark winters. D23’s sister is affected by SAD so I have those factors in mind.

I believe the athletic facilities being rebuilt are the D1 sports facilities (due to a large donation to do so). I don’t see that impacting rec center/gym/intramural type sports availability. I think the posters concern was just construction on campus being disruptive. My son was impressed with the major specific part of the admitted students day and decided on Maine .
I think we will buy one of those full spectrum lamps for his desk  for the winter.
