University of Maryland-College Park Class of 2021 Discussion

@NerdMom88 Are you sure? It says this on UMD’s site: “Admission decision letters for priority applicants are mailed by the end of January, and merit scholarship award notifications are mailed beginning by mid-March.”

@NerdMom88 And then on their faq page, they say, “For admitted students who applied by the Nov. 1 Priority Deadline, financial aid and merit scholarship decisions will be released electronically by April 1.”

No, I’m not sure – that’s why I qualified my opinion. However, we know B/K scholarship selection is underway and scholarships of varying amounts were announced via mail on 2/20. Based on what I’ve read about past years, I think that’s it. You can always call and check, though.

Hmmm…I hope I do get merit $$…
@maryversity @SoofDad Can you guys shed some light on this matter please?

@yahooaddict I talked to admissions yeseterday and they said all merit awards had been mailed this past weekend (which isn’t totally accurate as we know some of them went out earlier than that.

@14wjs14 Doesn’t sound too good!! Gaah, I thought I’d at least get some merit money since I’ m rank 1 and my sat score isn’t too bad. Oh well, hopefully I get some merit money somehow. Fingers crossed for realz now

@YoohooAddict - My D was also ranked #1 in her class, with good stats, and she did not get a scholarship from UMD. In fact, UMD was the only school that did not offer her a scholarship.

UMD just does not give out a lot of scholarships.

@SoofDad I’m sorry to hear that. Man, I was really hoping I’d get some $$ at least lol

@YoohooAddict Did UMD offer you any financial aid? Asking because I know most ppl wait to get their financial aid before they commit.

@collegegal2 No not yet, I’m put up for verification of my fafsa since I filed it on my own. I still have to send in one more verification doc (nonfiling statement from IRS) to get my financial aid. However, regardless of how much $$ I do get, I’m going to UMD and have already payed for enrollment.

@YoohooAddict I know you may not know, but I also have to send in my verification docs, but my fasfa was submitted months ago. Does this mean that I’m missing deadlines?

@RA2015 I think the deadline for the verification docs is April 1. If you login to see your financial aid status on UMD’s site, under the status tab, it displays a message saying that you need some documents verified and at the end of it, the deadline is put as April 1. Make sure you start ASAP as time is flying by really fast and the deadline is near! So to answer your question, no you didn’t miss the deadline I believe.

Does anyone know if it’s permissible to take some courses in the summer instead of starting in the fall just as a means of getting a headstart? I’ve contacted UMD, and a representative told me to check the summer class policies here
https://oes.umd.edu/incoming-current-visiting-students/summer-session/summer-session-academic-policies

but it’s a bit vague. If anyone has knowledge of this, would you mind helping out? Thanks in advance!

I sent in my finaid docs in January… does that mean my package if accepted is gonna be bad? I have a really low efc

@a20171 If you applied priority, you were eligible for merit aid, but you would already have been notified about that. Since you say “if accepted” does that mean you applied RD? I don’t think financial aid is dependent on getting your FAFSA, etc., in by a certain date, unless it’s after your RD acceptance, so you should be ok.

Yes RD @NerdMom88 thank you!

Hi everyone, congrats on your acceptances at UMCP! I have a quick question because our D18 is interested in applying next fall.

Does UMCP require that you send all SAT scores, or can you use the score choice option? She only took it once but scored well, so we’re debating whether it’s worth the risk of taking it a second time…just in case she doesn’t score as well as she did on her first try. Thanks for any help with this - websites I’ve checked present conflicting information on whether UMCP requires all scores to be submitted so I figured I’d check with those who recently applied.

@lifegarding - As far as I know, UMDCP requires all test scores. The Admissions Checklist web site does not state that, but it does state that they use the highest subscores (i.e they superscore). They can’t superscore if they do not get all the scores

Can someone respond to my post? It’s # 852

Thanks, @SoofDad. DD got a much higher math subscore than we expected, and although she’d like to bring up her critical reading/writing score, we are worried if she takes SAT again her math score might drop substantially. If that happens, we aren’t sure how schools will interpret the change.
