@lifegarding - I am confident that UMD will superscore your D’s test scores GPA is also a factor for initial admissions. Just make sure your D applies by the Priority deadline.
@YoohooAddict - Financial Aid is almost always at least the Standard Federal Student Loan. There may be a Grant also, but no one here can predict that.
@SoofDad I think you got the wrong post. I was talking about post #852. I’ll just repost here to make things simple.
Does anyone know if it’s permissible to take some courses in the summer instead of starting in the fall just as a means of getting a head start? I’ve contacted UMD, and a representative told me to check the summer class policies here https://oes.umd.edu/incoming-current-visiting-students/summer-session/summer-session-academic-policies
but it’s a bit vague. If anyone has knowledge of this, would you mind helping out? Thanks in advance!
My son applied for the Computer Science program in the regular track (i.e., not priority application). He has yet to hear their decision. My understanding is that decisions are made on a rolling basis and others have reported hearing that they’ve been accepted. Is the delay in hearing of the decision indicative of anything in particular? If it helps, his ACT is 33 (36 in Math & Science) & unweighted GPA is 3.7 (3.9 weighted) + 2 summer internships in software companies already.
@bakaroni - If your son applied by the Regular Decision of January 20, 2017, he will get his decision by April 1. Applications received after Jan 20, will be decided on a rolling, space available basis. This is the applicable UMD web page
@lifegarding I don’t think UMD requires that applicants submit all test scores, but since they superscore it can help. But if you take the SAT twice and one score is lower in both math and English you aren’t obligated to send it. I think Georgetown requires that you send all standardized test scores, but really, how do they know?
UMDCP is one of the few schools that require ALL SAT scores to be sent. They do superscore so presumably your lower scores won’t count against you. But they do require you to send all scores. So no, you cannot send the higher score only.
Official standardized test scores
The SAT or the ACT is required. Official scores should be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by the test administrator. We use the highest subscores from the SAT and ACT in our review of your application. We will accept scores from the old SAT and redesigned SAT (first administered in March 2016); we do not require the essay portion of the SAT. View College Board’s Concordance Tools to see how scores from the redesigned SAT compare to those on the old SAT.
SAT Subject Tests are not required; applicants who do not take Subject Tests are not disadvantaged in the admissions process. We do not require the writing portion of the ACT.
If you would like to receive credit toward your degree for successfully completing Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), A/AS level examinations, or certain other standard exams, those official scores must also be submitted once the student has been admitted.
But since they superscore, why wouldn’t you send them all? D17 took it twice because the first time her science score was lower than she wanted, and her superscore from the two sessions ended up two points higher.
Because you may take it more than twice and one set of scores may all be very low. Then you may not want the school to see these scores at all since they won’t be used in the superscore.
Here are 2 links from the College Board web site that will shed some light on UMD’s SAT score reporting requirements. Colleges and Universities may tell the College Board what their respective SAT Score reporting requirements are. The College Board WILL honor those requirements, regardless of what an individual student may desire.
However, if a student takes the SAT twice, sends the first score, and never requests the College Board to send the second score, then UMD will not receive the second score (nor even know about it). But if a student takes the SAT 3 times and requests the College Board to send the third score, then the College Board WILL send ALL 3 scores.
Thanks everyone. I hadn’t thought about the fact that she could send the first set of scores when she first applies, then send the second set if there is a benefit to doing so. She probably won’t retake it until late August because the first set is strong enough for most of the schools she wants to apply to…but Maryland is her reach school.
