Accepted fall 2019 CP Scholars
OOS (NY)
UW GPA: 3.87
SAT 1420
Good ECs
9 AP’s
Gender: Female
Major: Computer Science

Says Advising College is “Computer, Mathamatical and Natural Science”.
Is that what all CS majors are assigned to? Does this mean she is a direct admit into CS?

Also says have to respond to by 2/15 to indicate your preference in College Park Scholars. Does that mean she is committing to go there by doing that? We don’t want to commit to anything until we find out if there is any merit scholarships and until visiting the campus for accepted students day.

Can anyone shed some light? Thank in advance

@Empire007 - It is a Direct Admit to CS. All CS majors, as well as some other majors, are in that college. Selecting a Scholars program preference is NOT a binding commitment. You still have until May 1. Enrollment requires a $400 payment. There are no payments associated with Scholar program preference selection

@SoofDad Thanks for clarifying!

Thank you. When she gets a letter, we’ll look for that.

I can’t. CS was the only major I applied for though

@studentin2023 - You said that you were accepted into CS for Spring. Freshman Connection will allow you to start in the Fall. Freshman Connection is Not a major. It is an enrollment program

Is getting scholars an accomplishment? How many people get it each year?

@collegelifeeeee - Getting scholars is an accomplishment and is based on what you have achieved in high school. A bigger accomplishment is to graduate from UMD with Departmental Honors . I do not know how many students get into scholars.

Posted useful info on admissions

OOS, admitted CS with FIRE
SAT: 1510
GPA: 4.78 W
Class Rank: N/A
Lots of community service: have my own organization, have a partnership with an Indian rural dev minister’s org
6 year participation in MUN, 2 state-level awards, directed some of the largest MUNs
Strong essays/responses ig?- definitely had a unique, personal touch on them
Pretty good teacher recs, but not so sure how they turned out, 7.5 or 8/10?
Counselor rec - so so good, she went on and on about how she had to stop herself from writing over 3 pages, we have such a great bond
MUN lead ambassador
2 internships at extremely well-known companies
Math club captain
Classical Indian dancer for past decade
Talked a lot about how I was passionate about entrepreneurship, especially being a woman involved in STEM
have my own facial recognition technology

Can someone tell me - does everyone who gets accepted get invited to either honors, scholars or a living and learning community? Do they just choose which community they think would best suit that student and then invite them? My D got invited to the Carillon Communities and it says she was “selected from a highly talented group of applicants.” Do they say this but basically invite everyone to one of these communities or is it actually something selective? I did read the page on their web site but it still seems kind of vague.

what is university honors? my son was accented as a computer science major. He was also accepted into the
honors program. Unsure if he’s interspersed in the aces or not. Also does this go on the diploma?

are you sure? was told all student in honors college get a presidential scholarship…We are OOS, also son is a NMSF.

Accepted (white male)

ACT: 33
GPA: 3.6
State Residency: MD

Applied to: Business
Accepted to: Undecided (Letters & Sciences)

@lovemycats the incoming honors class is about 1k in size, and every year approx 400 students are awarded a presidential scholarship. not all of these students are in the honors program. getting an honors admission is not a guarantee of a presidential scholarship.

@SoofDad Will I be able to check my chances on starting in Fall through the Freshman connection before I accept the offer?

@pacnwfromne no not everyone who is accepted is invited into one of those programs. My son was accepted 3 years ago and was not invited into any of those programs.
