University of Maryland - College Park EA Class of 2023

@WhiteClamSauce Yes, EA decisions were released last Friday. But you are not alone. A fair number of people who thought they were ea have not yet received decisions. I suggest you check your Coalition checklist to make sure everything was received by Nov 1. Depending on what you find there, then check with your guidance counselor or contact UMD.

For those that applied business and were accepted into Letters & Science. I just spoke to an adviser from L&S whose specialty is dealing with the kids who hope to get into Smith. She was extremely helpful and did a great job helping me understand the whole process. They help the students develop a parallel plan in case they don’t get into Smith when the time comes to apply for that transfer. The plan b is usually economics either a bachelor of arts or science or Agricultural and resource economics. (The first 2 years of business or econ is basically the same class requirements.) They help the students build their class schedule so that they have a mix of easy and hard classes each semester to help achieve the best cumulative gpa. They have seminars to help with networking, etc so their application into Smith is as stand out as possible.

She also suggested the option of taking the gateway courses at community college over the summer or winter to help bolster the gpa. For example, she said Business stats’ grade consists of 3 tests. If you bomb one test there goes your grade.

She did say that if you have an offer direct into another school’s business college she does recommend going that route, especially for accounting hopefuls. There is not another plan out there for kids that hope to sit for CPA. It is competitive and the added stress of worrying about getting into you major may not be worth it. If you are determined to have a UMD degree it can be done but it is challenging.

She spent 30 minutes on the phone with me and covered each question and topic very thoroughly. I feel much better informed to help my D make her school decision.

FIRE on research email came, just general info!

I have 3 Terps but did different sessions with each. The Scholars session with my students was the most helpful. The College sessions are painfully full of general requirement information but the breakout sessions can answer specific questions about your major and what classes to take. Skipped Information Express (basically a trade fair for all things UMD)for the first two but found it helpful for my 3rd who wanted to talk to someone about ROTC. Dorm life and Dining info was helpful the first time around but most of that information is available from other sources. The day is meant to get you and your student excited about attending UMD so attend what is most important to you and your student and dont worry if you can’t get to it all.

is there a groupme for accepted students?

@md2384 Great info. Do you have a name for that person in admissions? I was going to call too but wasn’t sure if there were specific admissions counselors.

@masspmm I called the letters and science office 301-314-8418. The woman who answered the phone was quite helpful and then she checked if someone with more knowledge was available. (I tried admissions and Smith college first but didn’t learn anything).

Found following post from another thread.
Letters and sciences for Business and Engineering LEP appear to be extremely unreliable in providing any sense of confidence that student will get into those majors.

Got Accepted into Letters and Sciences at UMD College Park. What does that MEAN?

I recently received my acceptance letter from UMD College Park with my major stated as “Letters and Sciences”. I initially applied for the Robert H. Smith School of Business (my non-LEP major was Philosophy). I am transferring from PGCC with 47 credits ( I am currently completely the last 13 credits for my Associate’s).

How and when will I know if I was accepted into the School of Business? What should my next move be?

Thank you to all who took the time out to read and comment!

I am posting because I want to share what we learned about the Letters and Science acceptance at admitted student’s day today- my student applied as a Business major. First point is admissions does not fully understand how this program works. Key Point is that just because you are an internal transfer applicant you are not given priority to the LEP of your choice. In fact from what we were able to gather they actually commit to a local community college a certain number of acceptances. Another key point is that a transfer to your school of choice is very competitive-you need to do better than the students directly admitted to the school in order to transfer. For example,to get into the business school from Letters and Science you need a minimum of a 3.5 GPA after taking 45 credits, yet apparently all you need is a 2.0 GPA to stay in the business school at a 45 credit review ( as per the Business LEP information @lep.umd.edu). Third important point is that no one at the admitted students open house could tell you the percentage of students in Letters and Science that get into their school of choice after taking 45 credits- either they haven’t done the analysis-unlikely for a leading research institution- or they do not want you to know. Overall, my impression is that they are providing a dubious path to the business school that exists for only very few students. If you didn’t get into your major I strongly suggest you talk to as many people as you can and ask the tough questions. My student was accepted to many great business programs and I find it a disservice to try to entice students to UMD through the Letters and Science Program. Do your homework.

Accepted OOS California
Major: Physiology and Neurobiology
Invited to FIRE research

Does anyone have Yield rates for Honors Admissions.
Overall yield rate seems to be around 27%
But was looking for specifically for Honors. Couldn’t find it in CDS.

@MrProton2023 While your post regarding “sense of confidence” of getting admitted to a LEP from Letters and Sciences may hold mostly true for admission to Smith School of Business, I respectfully must correct your inclusion of A James Clark School of Engineering into that same assessment.

Engineering is extremely clear in their policy of internal transfer admission of students that pass the gateway courses satisfactorily.

For engineering, the competitive admissions are the direct admits as an incoming freshmen. However, admissions are NOT competitive as an internal transfer as long as you have completed the requirements satisfactorily. While they do say “on a space available basis” I have NEVER heard of anyone not being admitted to engineering as an internal transfer due to space issues. Students drop engineering because it’s a lot more work than they thought/it’s not what they expected/realize engineering is not for them. In contrast, students tend not to drop out of business. Two very different ball games.

Directly from engineering’s page on internal transfers (https://eng.umd.edu/undergraduate-transfer-admission):

"For best consideration both external (outside UMD) and internal transfer (current UMD) students will be admitted to the Clark School, on a space available basis, if they meet the following admission requirements:

A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in all courses taken at the University of Maryland and all other institutions is required for internal and external transfer students.

Completion of MATH 141 with minimum grade of B- or better.
Completion of PHYS 161 with a minimum grade of B- or better.
Completion of either CHEM 135 or CHEM 271 or CHEM 134 with a minimum grade of C- or better. (Students who take CHEM 134 must also complete CHEM 131 with a C-).
Students interested in applying to Bioengineering prior to Spring 2018 must also complete BIOE 120 with a minimum grade of B-."

@maryversity . Thanks for the correction and your perspective.

Isnt it pretty much what the other article said? B or better to transfer (internal or external) and C to stay in the program once admitted?

Deleted, duplicate

The meaning of “satisfactory”: for direct admits C is sufficient to stay in the program. For transfers the bar is much higher and I assume it is still competitive admission.

I applied in October and still haven’t heard back with an acceptance or rejection letter. Should I be worried? My counselor JUST submitted my recommendation last week after my constant nagging, might that kind of a thing have a part in why I’ve gotten no word as of yet?

@jensen25501

Yes

so when should i be expecting an acceptance letter? should i reach out to the admissions office or what?

@jensen25501 Call admissions.

@marcymar and anyone else caught in the “no decision” mess - My D also called the UMD admissions office this week. She was told that all of her documents had come in on time, but that for some reason they had incorrect dates for when they were scanned into the system. The person told her that she would pass on the information and packet to the review board and that her application would be reviewed on a priority basis just like the other priority applications, and that she should receive “communication” in 7-10 business days.
Not the immediate action @marcymar 's D received, but at least D has the hope of “communication in7-10 business days”. I hope some of the rest of you affected by this
