The decisions posted on the Coalition portal will indicated “Denied”, if that is the case. I don’t know if they send an actual letter for rejections.
does anyone know anything about b/k invites?
This is kind of a dumb question, but does anyone know if UMD students are pretty welcoming of out of state kids? I got in and I’m from the coastal Los Angeles area and several East Coast schools I toured (and applied to) a while back seemed to turn their noses up at West Coast kids.
also for the heck of it-

Coalition Essay topic: a very butchered version of my CommonApp essay about coming out
@noah2425 Yes, absolutely. In general, Maryland students are very friendly. My son and I are both OOS alum and both made lifetime friends at Maryland…so even though very different time periods, social experience was similar in that respect. East Coast schools that are less friendly tend to be more in the New England region and the ivies.
I will tell you, in all honesty, that the first semester freshman year is the toughest – only because (mostly guys) that are IS tend to go home on off-game weekends (hey, if you can get laundry done for you and mom’s cooking, why not…). So, if you happen to make friends with a lot of IS students that happened to be inclined to going home in the beginning, it may seem like more of a big deal every other weekend…at least at first. However, even though it may seem like a lot of kids go home at first, there are still PLENTY of kids on campus - both IS and OOS.
If it’s a weekend when there’s a home football game, no worries. You will see that as students become more acclimated to college life, the less they go home on weekends.
@maryversity thank you so much for the feedback!
Has anyone who applied to the School of Music had their portal change yet?
My son just received an email congratulating him on College Park Scholars, but his portal still just has the checklist. He really just wants to know if he was accepted to music!
Does anyone know anything about the CIVICUS Living and Learning Program? Any comments would be appreciated.
@sliu412 Banneker Key interview invites came out today. My S got an email from UMD around noon and it was also on his coalition app under the “checklist” tab.
My D (BioE/ Honors College ILS) is a full Banneker Key recipient. She had received her interview invitation through the mail the first week of February, but that was before UMD was on the Coalition application.
Congrats @"UMD2021&2023” - my D19 also got an invite, and wants to study the same path as your D - has your D enjoyed her experience?
D received decision today (accepted)… 4 days after contacting the admissions office about not having an EA decision. However, I don’t think she was given full consideration. I come to that conclusion by comparing her stats to her brother’s stats (who is a junior at UMD). He received a scholarship and was invited to the Honors College. She didn’t/wasn’t with equal ACT score and way better extracurriculars and way more DE credits. Oh well.
Music school decisions are out! My son got in both Music (separate email from Music school) and Engineering (letter in coalition app). Not sure why they could not have released the Engineering decision earlier. Also Honors College, but he may not apply since he will be busy with 2 majors!
@momof2atl Yes!! My D loves UMD, BioE and ILS. It was not originally her first choice, but after she got the b/k scholarship it quickly moved up her list. Please feel free to PM if you or your daughter would like any info about either program.
@“UMD2021&2023” thanks!! Didn’t get one, but it’s okay. Congrats to your son!! Hopefully something comes through with my top 20 colleges…
Anyone ever figure out what the asterisk (*) after the major means? Thanks.
@reads2222 - It means Limited Enrollment Program
@SoofDad - Thank you so much!
Has anyone gotten a hard copy of their physical acceptance letter in the mail?
Nope.
