University of Maryland - College Park Spring 2018 Transfer Admission

@aspringtobedoc Same here. I called the office this morning. A lady told me that my decision has not been released yet. Thats all.

Posting for future reference to prospective transfers:

Applied July 1, 2017 - Accepted October 17, 2017

Major: Computer Science
GPA: 3.90 - 62 credits (split between business courses and computer courses - I did not have an associates when I applied, although I will be receiving one in December 2017.)

Out-of-state transfer (New York)

No extracurricular activities or volunteer work. I do have a good amount of prior work experience (summer jors, un-related to my major).

Good luck!

@Carlos303 Days after I sumbitted my application on the Application Portal, I literally called them every single days the same questions if they received the necessary documents I submitted. They said they had received it and the Application Portal shows that my application is complete.

@Carlos303 I sent my application somewhere on July 25, so Iā€™ll probably receive the decision later than everyone.

@xiemxiem Iā€™m not gonna go to UMD because itā€™s so expensive for an out-of-state student like me. I moved back to Washington State to reestablish my residency and I plan to apply in Fall 2018. BUT STILL, ITā€™S NERVE-RACKING WHEN OTHERS HAVE RECIEVED THEIR DECISION.

@aspringtobedoc Thatā€™s strange, then. I applied the day of the deadline (August 1) and I received my decision on Oct 16. I would just wait it out until the end of the week, it seems people donā€™t all get the decisions the same day.

@Carlos303 Do they send an email too if the applicant is rejected for admission?

@aspringtobedoc I also didnā€™t hear back from them yet. I submitted my application July 27th so thatā€™s before the priority deadline. I called two days ago and the guy told me decisions will be sent out by Friday. Iā€™m surprised we still didnā€™t hear back. In any case, Iā€™m pretty sure they will let us know either way. Good luck!

@anamahone Have you received your decision? I still havenā€™t received anything yet. I failed to call them because their office hours is Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm EST (with the exception of holidays). Iā€™m on the West Coast I forgot they use EST. I mean they couldā€™ve released the decisions on the Application Portal if they canā€™t send loads of emails.

@aspringtobedoc I applied once before and they sent me an email regarding the rejection of my application. Itā€™s been a few days, I hope you have sorted out this anxious issue!

In case anyone wants more stats to refer to, I was accepted with:

  • Transferring from Montgomery College
  • 3.77 GPA

-13 Credits completed

-Not part of MTAP

-United States Navy veteran (honorable discharge)

-Recommendation letters from my military supervisors.

-I completed the admissions essay that isnā€™t required for transfer students (it can really help, I recommend doing it, anyways)

-Hispanic male, 23 years old

I called them and the lady told me that I have an international application, which I was not aware of. Iā€™m a US Permenent Resident (Green Card holder with a US Academic record from community college and have been living for 2 years). Iā€™ve called twice and they all just told me to email the Undergraduate Admissions. I prefer to go to University of Washington in Seattle but, for god sake, Iā€™m starting to hate UMD. It seems like the Admissions themselves have no idea if they have sent all decision emails/letters to applicants.

I called the next day after I knew that I was rejected, they said that it was the miscommunication in their system and they reconsidered my application. Apparently, I recieived my new decision on nov 25 indicating that I got accepted to engineering school.

I got accepted!!! For reference:

  • I sent my application on July 24, 2017.
  • I received my acceptance on Nov 1, 2017 at 4:45pm (IT WAS TOO LATE).

-Iā€™m an out-of-state.

  • I am transferring from Highline College (Washington State) with an Associate in Biology degree. I'm not going to UMD, though.

-80 credits completed; 10 foreign

  • 3.96 GPA
  • My Math series wasn't complete. I only finished PreCalc I.
  • no extracurriculars or volunteer work and never applied or had a job. We're really poor and I even finished the FAFSA for UMD like 7 months late from the January 1st deadline .
  • one recommendation letter from Biology instructor in community college and one from my PTK advisor (never seen her and never participated in the organization).
  • I have an Outstanding Performance in Biology award (It doesn't really matter but good to point out) from community college.
  • I'm Asian (Filipino), 19 years old. I'm a US Permanent resident (Green Card holder). I called them and they said I have an international application despite having been living for 2 years in US and graduating in community college. They didn't require me to take English proficiency exam because I graduated in communtiy college.

Hey guys, I didnā€™t get in. Im an economics major with 30 credits completed (46 after this semester). Iā€™ve always wanted to be a Terp since I was a kid. My Gpa is a 2.8/9, long complex reason/story why itā€™s not above the 3.0. Though Iā€™ve heard multiple stories that some people got in with lower GPAā€™s than mine.
This is my 2nd time applying (once from HS) should I try again? Iā€™m really upset, but I figured I may as well not give up.

Yea bro keep trying, I got declined my first time for my transfer fall 2017 application but got in my 2nd try for this spring. My gpa is about the same as yours so i knew i had to stand out a little somehow. My second time applying a submitted a resume that i didnā€™t bother adding to my application the first time and I refined my essay as best I could, I guess doing that might have helped my chances. If you have a legit reason for your gpa that doesnā€™t come across as an excuse, you might want to include that in your essay.

I had 54 credits btw and iā€™m an engineering major (but i got admitted to letters and sciences). Also if you can help it if youā€™re in-state try and accrue 60 credits before you apply again, if you have 60 credits along with a min gpa of 2.0 and are in the state of maryland, you are guaranteed admission if you apply by priority deadline. That was my plan for if I got declined for the 2nd time, but realistically if you canā€™t get this done you might want to be looking at other universities as well. Best of luck in the future man.

@cruddymood thanks for the reply man, and Iā€™ll definitely keep my head up. Iā€™ve accepted my offer of admission to another large school in MD that is within the University System of Maryland along with UMD (my previous school was a private school in maryland and not a member of the system^) .
but I plan to be there only until I get into college park, hopefully after 1 semester (this spring).

Also thank you for the insight, is it really true that if you got 60 credits, in-state, with a 2.0+ your almost guarenteed? In that case, that really brightens my mood haha.

My rejection letter said I should ā€œkeep a B average and higherā€ and ā€œenroll at another accredited institution within Marylandā€. Do you think if I include in my essay for fall 2018, that Iā€™m following the steps mentioned in my rejection letter they would consider me even more? Once again, thanks for the advice! Lets stay in touch!

Yeah, as long as you meet all that criteria and apply by the priority deadline you will be guaranteed admission, I believe the same applies if you get your associates at another maryland institution and want to transfer to umd, you can call their office of undergraduate admissions to confirm all this.

As far as the essay goes I would assume they admire tenacity, as long as you truly are bettering yourself with your grades and such (they will check your transcript afterall), you should definitely include it in your new essay. Anyways I was just in your shoes myself, I know how it feels to be rejected so iā€™m happy to help anyway I can.

@cruddymood Ok that sounds good, that definitely gives me more hope. Thanks so much again, I really appreciate it. Check your messages!

did anyone apply to mtap. I applied and am hoping to major in computer science
