University of Maryland Dorms - Freshman

Does anyone know how the whole process is done? Do we get to pick which residence hall we want?/Can freshmen live at the new Oakland Hall?

No, you do not get to pick your residence hall as a freshman. If you are in a particular program (honors, scholars, CIVICUS, Flexus, Virtus, Global Communities, etc) that has a specific residence hall designated for that program, that’s where you will be assigned. Most freshman are in the standard, high rise dorms. Oakland is typically sophomore and up. If there is a random room open in a non-typical freshman residence hall (like Oakland or one of the South Hill residences) it is possible that you might be placed there - but not something you can request per se at this stage of the game. The only way to increase chance to get that is if you know a current student who requests to pull you into his/her room in the residence you want. They do honor roommate requests as best as possible - the request has to be mutual.
