Hello everyone,
I have recently been accepted to both schools and was curious about everyones general opinions on these schools. I plan on being a business major. However, I was not directly admitted into the Smith school of business at UMD and would have to internally transfer.
What are pros/cons of each school? Which school has a better overall reputation? Is it worth paying the OOS tuition to attend UF even if financing my education is not a problem regardless of where I attend?
Thank you all for your input!
Have you visited UF? We are in Florida. UF seems best known for it’s strength in medical related degrees, but I assume you have researched your major. Personally, If the area around the school matters to you…Gainesville doesn’t have much near the campus. It seems to be mostly bars and pizza places. Football is HUGE at UF. My D had no interest in applying there, but obviously, many do!
I haven’t studied the rankings, but UMD seems to have the stronger reputation overall. How hard will it be to transfer into the business school? Where do you hope to have your career? In Florida or further north?
I have not visited UF yet. From my own research it seems that UMD has a bit of a better reputation but not by much. They both are great schools. It seems that it would be competitive but not impossible to transfer into the business school at Maryland. They accept 70% of the internal/external applicants and the average GPA is a 3.5. I am open to where I want to begin my career after college. I don’t really have a preference.
why don’t you ask over on the UMD forum how hard it is to transfer into Smith? There are good people over at the forum who may be able to help you. I suggest this because I think you’re better off at UMD than UF. It is generally thought of as a better school, and in business it is quite strong. My S went there and I was impressed with the school; the school challenged him, and that surprised both of us, I think. We’re from MD, too, and surprisingly he didn’t have a lot of contact with people from his high school or county, altho UMD was 15 minutes from home. Occasionally, he’d see someone from the hs, but even then it rarely resulted in anything but a “yo” or a nod. An introverted boy, he nonetheless found the dorm system to his liking and made a lot of good friends who are still his friends. The hs friends kind of dried up. We never saw him either accept upon invitation to take he and his friends shopping or to dinner. He grew up and away while there, and that is what we all wanted to see happen.
