My brother wants to apply ED. concerned about financial. how accurate is NPC?

Ours was pretty close. It was a combo of merit and need stacked and was one of the most generous packages. The merit is guaranteed for the 4 years so that is a known as you try to budget.

UMiami has lots of great programs and a ton of flexibility.

Make sure to look at the housing options and prices when comparing. The new ones they highlight were extremely pricey and felt like they could create very different experiences.

If concerned about costs, EA may be a better route for him. He may want to be able to compare financial aid packages. And it still puts him in the running for some of their larger scholarships.

Thank you. He was thinking ED because his stats are not super high

Based on the past couple years, he will probably get deferred then unless you are full pay which it does not sound like you are.

You have to dig for it, but UMiami is need aware.

“In order to eliminate this gap, like other selective institutions, the University is adopting need-aware admission. “

And remember, if he does get in ED it is binding and he won’t be able to compare other offers.

My mother actually found that. She ran the NPC which says he would get 30k in aid - which would still be expensive. I was wondering how accurate. I get more than that from Tufts and he will be a second student in college at the same time. (if that matters)

I would be worried about applying ED then.

would you happen to know how they use home equity?

Yes, as far as I can tell UMiami will look at home equity in the CSS profile. I am not sure of their formula related to income. Some schools cap the amount of equity considered based on total income.

They asked different questions on the CSS than any other schools my kids applied to including what kind of cars we drive. That one made me laugh a little as it seemed like a very Miami thing to ask. No Lamborghini in this garage.

They were also the only one worried that we had filed our taxes electronically and did not have hand written signatures on our taxes.

Haha…funny about the cars and Miami. We have a 2014 GMC.

Lower on income side but we own a home and a rental (passed down from grandparents) and it seems they calculate the equity against you but can’t find a formula anywhere.

Thanks for all your input!

BTW …I’m helping out as I have been through this before and my brother was in the hospital for half of September and had a procedure done today. Luckily he finished his common app and most other essays before August 1st.

Good luck to him and I hope he recovers swiftly. He is lucky to have you. Keep up with your classes at Tufts and enjoy your time there!

The rental/2nd property does throw off the CSS numbers, but the merit at Miami could help.

Thanks for your help and your kind words!

My brother accepted ED1.
90 GPA
1380 SAT
Good financial aid

Good luck - my cousin waiting on tomorrow…he’s 4.0 test optional

Tomorrow isn’t ED2. EA comes out before ED2 so if something is tomorrow it’s EA. ED2 is February.

correct - I meant to say EA. Thank you

Waiting on ED2 which should be out any day…anyone have info on stats for ED1 (whether or not admitted)? Appreciate it
