This is a thread for those of us who made it! Congrats to the 29 of us!

I'm juggling a few ivy league schools, state schools, and a couple full rides but I am 99.9% sure I will be attending HPM next year. I knew when we interviewed in Miami that this was the school I was going to be at. Hell, my dad said that I fit in here better than Harvard (where my sister resides).

I was just wondering about the number of applicants we had. From what I heard, HPM is one of the most selective groups because it offers credit for APs unlike so many other ivy/ivy pars and bs/md programs. I love how you can be a religion major but still have a seat on hold at Miller School of Medicine. How many doctors do you know that pursued playwriting in college?

I know that if you're a Hurricane by now in the HPM you're probably pretty humble like I am, but I can't help but wonder what "percent" we are in. My sister is very happy for me and sometimes says she is jealous she didn't apply (we both love Miami and Harvard equally, no down playing, friendly sibling rivalry). Harvard isn't my "fit" and I want a career in medicine and global/public health; something Miami will succeed at more than MGH in Boston.

Nevertheless my sister brags, in a loving manner of course, "We are the 6%."

I wanted to know the statistics for our group. I've heard anywhere between 1000-3500 applications go to Miami HPM. Our interviews had around 90 kids and our class is only 29 as of now! I've also heard that there were around 300 applications from other sources. If they did in fact have 300 or 3000, either way "We are the 10%" or "We are the 1%" are very impressive statements. I'd just like a statistic to tell all the people who wonder why I chose Miami over the Ivy League (anyone who got in to Miami knows EXACTLY why you want to go to the U).

If you're juggling a decision, remember to pick a place that fits YOU. As my parents acknowledged, I'm smarter than my sister. My sister goes to Harvard, and I could go to, but that's not the person I am. As I've learned, going to a combined Med Program doesn't make you any more rudimentary than your ivy counterparts, AND vice versa.

It's not me. Sure, I could go there and do great. But it's not what I'd be happy with, it's not me. I'll be bleeding green and orange from now on until I send my deposit but I'll have a special place in my heart for the ivys I was blessed enough to have the opportunity to attend. I wish others were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to apply and have options like I did. Not many people get into their first choice, and fortunately for my sister and I, we both did.

In addition, if anyone knows of a facebook group for HPM, we might as well start networking now!

Thanks!
