My 9th grade daughter got a D in honors biology last semester, and needs to make up the class in order to get credit. Do any of you have any experience with the University of Miami online HS courses? According to their website, they are accredited by SACS, and they offer an honors bio course over the summer, to be completed within a 10-week period. Since the work will be review for my daughter (she understands the concepts well enough, just didn't turn in some assignments) I'm thinking that this might be an OK way to make up the credit.
Also, does anyone know how colleges will regard credits obtained in this fashion? (Thank goodness this happened in freshman year!)

Was the honors biology only a semester course or was she on block schedule (my kids are) or did she just get a D last semester and now has a passing grade this semester? It would be up to her high school if they would allow credit for the University of Miami course. How it would appear on her transcript would be another issue. I think it would be beneficial to ask her guidance counselor and check your school's/district's transfer policy. Does the district replace the grade? Does the district average the two grades? Does the district just add the new grade and let the old grade (D) remain on the transcript? Is the old and new grade both in the new cumulative GPA or is only one grade factored in? All questions either the registrar or GC at your D's school can answer.

I used Brigham Young, it was cheap. Just make sure the school approves it (in writing) first.

I have already spoken to my daughter's guidance counselor about her Bio grade. It was in the first semester of a two-semester course, and, although my D swears she's going to bring her grades up this semester, the first semester D will remain on her transcript. UCs require a grade of C or higher in all their a-g courses for admission, so if she doesn't do something to change that grade the UCs will no longer be an option for college. If she attends summer school and gets a higher grade, the grades will be averaged, but since the district's summer school dates conflict with our other summer plans (and would require a daily 50 mile RT commute), I'm trying to explore other options. I'd appreciate any input from those who are familiar with the UM program, as I will have to make a proposal to our principal to get approval. Online courses are viewed with skepticism at our school, so I will have an uphill battle.
Unfortunately, many kids at our school have taken BYU online courses, and that's what has created the controversy about online courses in our district. The physics teacher at our school was quoted in the school paper as saying that BYU's online physics class was "horrible", so BYU biology would be a tough sell. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
