Don’t know and please reach out to the transfer team. Transferring is a whole different animal. I would assume they will look at anything printed on your transcripts and make a judement from there. This is the Early Action thread. You might want to make a separate thread about transferring. There is usually a transfer thread that one of the students makes. There was one from last year and your answer might be in there but they will answer your question if you call /email directly.
Son, rising senior, goes to instate rural, noncompetitive public school that offers a total of 6 AP courses, not known for its rigor (class of 2023 valedictorian did NOT get into Michigan, but salutatorian did)
UW GPA: 3.99
W GPA: 4.09
Son has taken AP Microecon (4) and AP Bio (5) - The only 5 in his class.
Senior year course load includes 3 more AP courses.
Will be applying to LSA Biomolecular Science.
SAT 1330 (eng 660, math 670) - Retaking in Aug.
Extra Curricular activities -
3 sport Varsity Athlete for 4 years. Co-captain in at least the fall sport and likely Academic All-State and possible Co-captain in winter sport. Winter sport team is 3 time state finalist last three years. NOT a recruited athlete. Could play high level club or D3, but no interest.
Marching Band 4 years. Drum Major 11th and 12th Grade.
First chair in his instrument 11th and 12th Grade Concert Band. Regional All-Star Band, State Solo and Ensemble Qualifier. DOES want to be in Marching Band and in Athletic Bands in college.

Volunteers with Elementary athletic clubs, learn to play, and is a licensed official for competitive sports (both as a volunteer and paying job)
National Honor Society - lots of service hours.
Part time job for family business.
Chance him please! The SAT score creep during test flexible is freaking him out. Admissions counselor at a recent event is sounding like students should submit even if they’re below 25th percentile if they’re above the median for their own school, especially in-state. I’m dubious about that claim. We know of a lot of mediocre students who seem to have had good luck not submitting scores in-state, but our school’s valedictorian got rejected test-optional. The 1330 is a top 5 score in his high school class of 150. Help please and thanks so much!
So the Sat score won’t be the reason he’s accepted or not accepted. He is judged just by the school he goes to
The AO will evaluate that. Does your school have Naviance or the like? If so where does that put your son?
Also if applying for the band that could be his ticket in if chosen. It’s suppose to be a fun, great experience.
I would normally say not to send the score but in your case I don’t think it will make a difference. He seems to be in the top tier at your instate school and that and taking 3 Aps senior year mean more to Michigan then just one Sat score.
BTW - many schools Vals don’t get accepted.
If your school sends students yearly then I think your in good shape. Just no senoritis Michigan thinks senior year is the students chance to get ready for college.
The things they look for are doing a few things consistently for a few years and if you can do them at a high level then great. Working is a great ec regardless where it’s at.
Great academics: 4.0uw/5.0uw, 5 APs - all 5s; SAT: 1760
Not so great ECs: enthusiastic and committed speech/debate. Some competitive semis / finals; decent musician but not competitive; written unpublished research
I’m sorry, I got confused. I’m an immigrant to this country so never went through this process.
SAT is 1560. Not too sure of APs. I think US History, Calc A/B, English. Not sure of others.
If you want a good “chance me” then I need to know which Aps and what the highest math taken was and which sciences they took. Then I will do my best.
4/5 unweighted with Aps doesn’t seem correct. Did he get all As? Is it a regular high school or were there honor classes also or regular classes with Aps?
What is he taking this year? The reason I ask is Michigan loves rigor. Taking the most challenging classes. Especially for engineering which my son graduated 2 years ago.
He needs to write a good essay. Everything counts at Michigan. Being out of state it is still a reach. They had about 85,000 applications last year. Make sure he applies to a wide variety of schools and have safeties or schools that he is at the 75% or higher at. Just because he is doesn’t mean he will get in. He is highly qualified but so are all the engineering students. Michigan’s avg is 34 Act(1520 Sat) with 3.93 unweighted GPA. Good luck.
Thanks for the guidance. Pretty much what I expected. He is taking a heavy course load this year but will not end up maxing on APs. He loves his music and early on in HS decided he’s going to do what he loves even if it means paying the price later on. I do respect that decision come what may.
My son is confused if he should do Early action and Regular Decision, His SAT is 1510, GPA 3.842 is 9 APs including senior year and 6 Dual enrollment courses. His GPA might go up in mid year thats why he is confused if he should do EA or not as he will miss out the chance to showcase better GPA. He had B’s in Maths in 10 and 11th grade and doing better in Math in Senior year so is not sure if he should wait. He will be applying for Cognitive science
