University of Michigan Ann Arbor Early Action Fall 2024

So you don’t need a 4.0 for Michigan. They just want to see he is challenging himself and yes in Senior year. Approximately half of the senior class in theory is given offers in EA. If he gets deferred then he has a second chance per se. If he enters RD it’s either Accept /deny or wait list.

I am also under the school of thought that applying early is showing interest also. Their website will tell you it doesn’t matter but it does seem the higher Stat kids tend to go first (but not all high stats kids), so your child is right there.

This is what they look for.

Do you happen to know if there is a set policy on twins at Michigan? This is for OOS, public high school.

Twin 1 - 3.89uw/4.72w, 35 act (35 in all sections), wants engineering or comp sci
14 AP courses including five in current senior year
Three years of physics including AP physics C this year
Four years of comp sci including Java, Python and now both advanced topics and TA.
Currently in AP Calc AB but considering moving up to BC, he is concerned about getting dinged for this.
This twin only has a few B’s during 9th grade when online all year.

Twin 2 - 3.91uw/4.76w, 35 act (2x35, 1x34, 1x36), wants bio or something similar in LSA
15 AP courses including six in current senior year
Three years of bio including AP
Three years of chem including AP
Currently in AP Calc BC
This twin also is mostly A’s with a couple Bs in 9th grade and maybe one other somewhere in non-stem class one semester.

Thank you. I feel like #2 is stronger in part because LSA has a higher admit rate than COE or comp sci, but will it even matter if one does not make it?

No twin policy. Years ago it seemed like many twins got accepted. The last 5 years or so it doesn’t seem that is happening. But they are both more then capable. Michigan likes rigor and GPA. Both kids have that. They also want kids taking the most rigorous classes are they can get a good grade in. Many engineering kids have either Calc. But if he thinks he can get a great grade in BC then yes. Nothing in life is a guareentee. Taking 5Aps senior year probably means more then one grade. Your looked at, at what your school offers. Some schools don’t have many Aps and still accepted into engineering.

Coming oos is harder. My son did. Had 6 Aps senior year with Multivariate Calc. Many of his friend had Calc 1 and some pre Calc but the major took the hardest classes offered, if they could still get a good grade in it.

You also don’t need all As.

They also like kids that are active in other things besides school work. They want active kids on campus.

Comp Sci is direct admit now. So if that is what he wants he needs to know that going in. He can transfer out into other engineering if it doesn’t work out but talk to the school first about that.

So you bring up the question of who has a better chance of getting accepted Lsa vs engineering.

There used to be a larger separator but not now really.

Lsa 3.9 with 32-35 Act.
Engineering 3.93 with 34 Act.

This is what separates Michigan from it’s Big Ten brothers (NorthWestern being the only private school).

My son choose Michigan for one reason he wanted to be among kids in the same educational intellect.

Also it’s not that the more Aps win. Some schools start Aps I swear in like nursery school where my son’s school really encouraged them starting Junior year. His school that year was the top school in the state. This is why your judged by your school and really not others.

Look at Naviance. Also what is the history of your school sending students to Michigan. They are both qualified. But they are up against the other almost 90 000 that apply also.

Good Luck and Go Blue.

It does happen though Michigan identical twins are co-valedictorians, fraternal twins rank 3rd and 4th - mlive.com

As an aside. Michigan is doing a study in twins…

In one of my freshman discussions we have 3 twins who go to school with their other twin. The class size is ~30 in there, so may be coincidence, but, might be a useful reference

“LSA 3.9 with 32-35 Act.
Engineering 3.93 with 34 Act.”

Would it be possible to provide this breakdown in terms of SAT scores please.

When talking about already accepted recruited athletes, this is one. There are around 300 or more of these…

It seems you are passing yourself off as an insider at UMich but there are grammatical errors in many of your responses. Just think parents should take heed that you are not an official representative of the university. When you say “We are here to help” who is We?

Such as:
Hi, chances are just guesses. But instate (in-state) she looks great and yes send the sat. Your (should be you’re) instate (in-state) and it doesn’t need to be extremely high. Her classes should show rigor and do well in then (them) through senior year.

It’s suppose (should be supposed) to be a fun, great experience.

Thank you for the corrections. I do this on my phone and blame it for all errors. :joy::iphone:.

My history on here speaks for itself and being asked to be an Essay reader does as well. “We” are the other cc helpers that will be very obvious once this application season kicks into high gear.

I will be more careful in my responses.

“We” used to have actual insider information on release dates and was accurate for a few years.

“We” also had staffers from University of Michigan reach out to us personally to thank us for being factual.

I have also personally given advice to many students I know in real life on their application for the school and all got in EA… Sometimes we get lucky…

I do appreciate you pointing out my bad texting and will try to be better at that.
Spell check just isn’t working great on my Pixel.:joy::ballot_box_with_check:

Longtime lurker here since D21 applied (she is currently a junior at Umich). Now I’m here for D24. Just wanted to say how helpful Knowstuff and sushiritto have been for many years and that I appreciate that you both volunteer to continue to answer questions and offer encouragement to students and parents on this thread. Thanks for being here, even after your kids have graduated. Please carry on and always Go Blue!

That’s very kind
Thank you very much. I am sure @sushiritto feels the same if we can get him off the beach soon :beach_umbrella::joy:

As someone with two kids currently attending UMich, I could not agree more. The post by MDmom2021 was completely unwarranted. Knowsstuff has never held himself out as someone who works for or is officially associated with UMich. He has always characterized himself as a UMich parent.

“We” are the students and parents who have gone through the admission process either as students or as parents and have been participating on this forum for years.

Speaking for myself, D18 applied EA on 10/31/2017, was accepted and ultimately graduated in the Spring 2022. I’ve been participating since around that time and I’ve actually gone back through this forum almost decade before my D18’s application.

I’ve also tracked CC’s stats both in EA and the deferred/postponement process.

Yes, it should be fun, that’s why it’s an unwritten (or maybe it’s written) rule that we don’t correct grammatical errors on this forum. @Knowsstuff had a son graduate Michigan is a doctor in the Chicago area. I’m located in the SF Bay Area.

And of course, chance me posts and threads are guesses. No new news there. I often don’t respond, because I find them useless since we can read the entire application.

My daughter just submitted her Common App, so now we wait. She will be a business major, and here are her stats: OOS, GPA 4.3W/3.98UW, SAT 1480, 7APs. This is likely a long shot, but you gotta have a reach or two in the mix.

Good luck. Keep in mind that at Michigan you don’t need a degree at Ross for Business. Many are highly successful and get similar jobs without it.

Many are also deferred to RD but get accepted later on. Get ready for a long ride

My post is the one Knowstuff very kindly responded to and which has been analyzed for all the grammatical mistakes. I am incredibly grateful for the opinions offered. I don’t think an analysis of grammar and punctuation and intent was warranted. Thank you Knowstuff and sushiritto for all that you do and please continue offering us your valuable opinions.

Yes, patience everyone. Michigan’s admissions process is long and arduous. It’ll frustrate most everyone.
