S24 OOS just applied EA for Data Science at LSA
3.9 UW/ 4.4 Weighted
1530 SAT single sitting (780M/750V)
3 Dual enrollment classes
6 APs, CalcAB(5), US History(5), EngLang(4), Gov, CompSciP and CalcBC
4 year Varsity basketball starter (but will just be rooting from the stands in college)
That feels like forever! Submitted last night and really want to log on to make sure all the other information has reached the school It’s good to know that it will take a few days. Most schools had a day or two turnaround.
Appreciate any thoughts on chances- we went through this process with my DD in 2020 and, though she ended up with a happy outcome, the process scarred us all.
DS applying EA to LSA, specifically interested in PitE (program in the environment)
1570 SAT, 12APs and 3 college courses in a school with not many APs offered
4.7 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
Decent activities but certainly no international prizes or similar
I just don’t know what to think anymore- should we mentally prepare for a deferral or even rejection?
Always prepare for it but you know she’s really accomplished. Go by how many from her school get accepted vs how many actually matriculate.
Good luck
App is in. Since we’re OOS, we fully expect a deferral. We’d be delighted with an admit and shocked by a reject.
Congrats!! Time for ice cream
I actually do have a question @Knowsstuff
My kid has decent ECs and one in particular that he’s passionate about. However, none of them are engineering-related. His interest in the field developed pretty late in HS.
I’m wondering how much this hurts his app. There is a video on the Mich website where they specifically say that no exposure to engineering is required. But I wonder if that is really true in reality given the number of qualified apps they get. Who are they going to pick: the kid who ran the robotics club or one who has demonstrated no interest in engineering.
I suppose this question applies to any top engineering program. He’s applying to several…
It’s not the Ec that gets your kid into engineering. It’s the total make up of the student through grades, stats, Ec, recommendations. Some kids come in with Calc 1 and some with Calc 3. They are making up a class and want diversity. So it doesn’t hurt him at all. My kid had no previous engineering except for some summer camps. His ecs were not engineering related at all. He loved his engineering discipline at Michigan. Michigan gave him tons of opportunities even during the pandemic, which he was part of unfortunately.
Thanks. Unfortunately his school hasn’t had applicants so Naviance is no help.
We are in-state. But my kid was super active in robotics and got into Michigan engineering. There were quite a few others in his school that also got into Michigan engineering who had never done robotics at any level. I was involved in it for many years, so I’m 100% sure these kids were not. We don’t have other engineering clubs either. So, it’s very possible!
When I applied last year, I think that the supplementals are submitted separately.
Hello,
My son submitted his application on Monday 10/30, but he still has not received any email to setup his portal. How many days did it take for your kids from date of submission to portal email ?
My kiddo applied on 10/1 and received the portal link (to her spam!) on 10/5.
Mine applied 10/31 and hadn’t received as of last night.
Michigan tends to take longer then some schools but always check spam. Great point. If your not hearing anything in a week call admission or call them today. They are very helpful
Some dates to remember…
My D24 has a 33ACT - 36 Math, 36 English, 35 Science, 26 Reading. How badly will that Reading score affect her chances for a Math/Statistics major?
What is her unweighted GPA?
4.0 UW
4.44 W
8 APs (max allowed at her school)
Top 5% of class
So she is competitive. If she did well in school and classes that had reading /writing which she did then it’s just a blimp and nothing to be too concerned with but yes, it will be looked at and stick out and there is nothing you can do about it. But so will her 2 - 36 and the 35. Those will count more. Saying this getting into Michigan gets more competitive yearly. Many will have the same stats and accomplishment. They look at GPA and rigor and she has that in spades. If she wrote a good essay hopefully that can set her apart. It’s a reach for most who apply so hang on since this could be a long ride. Good luck.
