If anyone has applied or is planning on applying to Winter 2017 semester, post questions or comments here!
I’m applying as a transfer to LSA
I’m an international student. I have earned 78 credits and will have 93 credits at the end of this semester. I’m worried that I have earned too many credits. I’ve heard that U of M does not prefer applicants with 90+ credits, is that true?
I don’t think Michigan cares. But you do realize that in order to graduate from Michigan, you must complete at least 60 credits at Michigan. That was the policy back in my day anyways.
Thanks for your reply.
Yes it’s required by the residency policy. I think they also said that only 60 credits can be transferred from other institutions, so I’ll certainly lose some of the credits I have already earned. But I’m eager to leave my current university so it really doesn’t matter.
Not every credit will transfer in most cases for a variety of reasons.
Yes I know. Actually I’m not worry about credit transfer. It’s ok for me to lose some of the credits. But some universities do care about how many credits we have already earned, and I’m wondering whether Umich is one of them…
I am applying to transfer to LSA in the winter 2017. I rolled over my application after applying for transfer in the fall 2016. My high school grades are ass but I’m a 4.0 student now. I’ll have 30 credits graded by winter 2016. plus 12 AP credits and 14 credits I am currently taking this semester. I know my best chance to get in is fall 2017 when I will be a junior but I have nothing to lose by applying now.
I’m also applying as a transfer to LSA, but I’m a bit unique in that I was homeschooled, so I have no grades from highschool nor any ACT or SAT scores to send in.
I’ve been going to a local CC for 5 semesters. I have 58 credit hours, and a 3.85 GPA. In terms of extracurriculars I’m a bit lacking, I’ve had the same job for the past 3 years (~30 hours a week during school, 40 during summer), and I’m also part of a loosely knit longboarding group that isn’t associated with any school or anything. I also have a letter of recommendation from a professor who is a UofM alumni. I’m in state, and I’ve written up some pretty good essays (in my opinion).
Do I have any chance, or am I most likely going to get rejected?
unusedusername, are you a Michigan resident? What CC did you attend?
Yes I am, and Macomb community college.
@unusedusername I think you have a really good chance honestly. The main things they look at are credit hours and gpa. You have plenty of credits and your GPA is good. I think you’ve got a pretty good chance.
Really? That’s awesome. Still gonna try and keep my hopes low though, lol. Does UMich take into account how many credits I take a semester, though? Because I have 58 over the course of 5 semesters, so I’ve been taking 3 4-credit hour classes each semester (with the exception of 4 classes totaling 14 hours last semester and only 2 classes totaling 8 this semester). Will this negatively affect me?
Can you chance me as well for LSA?
CC: Schoolcraft College (in-state)
3.5 GPA
45 credits
Hooks: First person in my family to go to college
ECs/Awards: Won 1st place in college writing contest, which was featured in college newspaper. Not many other extracurriculars.
Intended major: CS
@unusedusername , lots of students go to CC part time. It won’t have any effect on admissions. Michigan charges the same amount between 12 and 18 credit hours (‘full time’). You’ll save some tuition money if you take an extra class compared to your current average.
That’s good to hear.
A problem I just came across is that I just recently found out that out of the 58 credits I’ve taken, only 34 are going to transfer. How negative of an impact is that going to have?
I’ve applied from CC out of state. After this semester I’ll have +60 credits and for my first 45 I have a 4.0. I’m applying to LSA and I had a major, but on the application status on Wolverine access it says undecided. Anyone else see this on their application? I submitted my ACT score as well, but it hasn’t shown up either. I have a few things to clear up I think. How difficult is it to get in and if you do are scholarships difficult to obtain for winter semester?
@unusedusername , the only negative impact ($$) is that you will be at Michigan for an extra year. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing from a life perspective, a lot of the transfer students don’t get to fully appreciate the social and extracurricular activities that you will be able to experience with an extra year. You will have a year’s more of wonderful memories, the possibility of going abroad for a semester or summer, and more time to meet interesting people and live in Ann Arbor.
@surfghost I applied out of state to LSA. I saw mine was set as undecided too. I called and asked… They said LSA doesn’t show the major, everyone on Wolverine Access applying to LSA will show undecided. It also won’t show any information for previous schools.
For my ACT scores, it shows the date I took it. So if it doesn’t say the test date, I’m thinking it might not be processed or they never received it. I suggest calling them to check. They are very friendly and helpful! 734-764-7433.
I’m still waiting for my HS to send my transcript. So it says at the bottom of the credentials link “Other Required Application Material” - Final Secondary School Record: Material Status, Not Received.
Good Luck!
ayyye no way I go to schoolcraft too! Now when I applied in the fall I had 42 credits and a 4.0 and was denied. But I don’t want you to be discouraged. When I applied in the fall 12 of those credits were from AP courses, 15 of those actually were graded and on my transcript, and the other 15 I was actually taking at the time. My high school grades are also terrible. So if your high school grades are good and you’ve got more credits actually graded then I think you’ve got a shot. They really like people to be at junior status is what I’ve been told. The more credits you have the better.
I’ve heard before that scholarship and financial aid in general are very hard to get as an OOS student. But I would recommend talking to the financial aid office because they’re the only ones who could ever truly know. I think you’ve got a good shot at getting in. If possible try to attend a Transfer Tuesday event at the school. I’m not sure how far away you live from Michigan but the Transfer Tuesday events are a great. You get a tour of the campus and you get to meet with credit evaluators and financial aid. The reason I suggest this is because you’re really going to want to make sure you credits actually transfer. That will make or break your admission I’d say.
