Please post thoughts, questions or any comments about transferring to Michigan for the October 1st deadline
I will be trying to transfer for Winter of '16.
If anyone on here has transferred half-way through the school year, what are some of the added challenges compared to regular fall transfer?
I think it may be a bit easier because there are less applicants for winter term, it is just transfers instead of transfers and freshmen for fall
@walter03 how many credits do you have? and what is your gpa?
close to 60 credits, will be a junior in the fall…3.1 gpa for general studies and I play a division 1 sport
@amethyst2 at Cal Poly SLO not a community college so its much harder
I know this is a bit early to inquire about… but does anyone have any info on the need to resubmit a transfer essay if u have already applied before (and were denied) and then just push ur app to the winter or next term? Technically the common app has already been completed and transcripts are the only thing required. Does anyone resend another essay… especially since u have college experience now and a different perspective on things? Just wondering if this would help or not.
@Grape12 I actually called in about this before I was accepted as a transfer. The lady on the phone said I could resubmit my app every semester and I wouldn’t have to change anything. I think it would definitely help to make sure everything is better the next time around, though, even moreso if you initially applied as a freshman and are now trying to transfer.
Glad this thread started!!! I’m applying as a transfer to LSA.
My biggest worry are my credits. I have a lot (100 by Winter 2016 will be completed) but have mostly credits from a private art school, and I doubt they will transfer. Does anyone know if it hurts an application to be applying with non-transferrable courses, or is it more about just proving that you have a solid college record & GPA to substantiate that?
Also does anyone else suffer from lack of extra curriculars? I work because I have to pay rent and all that jazz, and frankly I haven’t been able to pick up traditional extra curriculars like athletics or clubs. I have hobbies but I’m not sure that counts I’m worried it’ll hurt my application, and am not sure how I should approach it within the application. Does it help if I list all of my jobs since high school???
Stats:
ACT: 30 composite
College GPA: 3.6
Credits: 76 completed, 8 in progress, 16 registered for Fall
Two recommendation letters in progress
I wanna say “Chance me” but the transfer admissions doesn’t publish enough data However I did find some terribly organized data sheets on transfer students to UM that shows schools they came from and GPA. They are terribly organized but if anyone is interested I’ll dig up that link. I thought it was mostly useless but it will show you how many people went from your school to UM
Applying to LSA Winter 2016. Out of state applicant.
College GPA (Elon Univ.) 3.71, 37 credits completed after freshman year
High School GPA: 3.73 Weighted, 6 APs

Will have 1-2 strong letters of recommendation, in addition to strong essays.
I would say chance me, but frankly, I’ll leave it up to UMich admissions.
Applying to LSA Winter 2016: In state
College GPA: 3.61111 (Currently 50 credits)
3.5 high school GPA, 22 on ACT (Did early college at Eastern Michigan University and Washtenaw Middle College)
EC’s: Tennis, Stoic Society, French Society
I’m gonna have around 89 credits…it’s a lot, I am currently enrolled in Early College at Eastern Michigan, so I am technically still in high school, by my high school stats are horrible so I’m trying to apply as a transfer by taking 9 credits in spring after my graduation, do you guys think I will counted as junior status since I will have 80 credits from early college but 9 after my graduation, so now a qualifying as a transfer student? Help…thanks guys.
@melanietran1997 I’m not familiar with “early college”, but have you looked at UM’s transfer guide? If the classes you took are listed there, then they’ll count towards your junior status. But if these “early college” classes vary even a little bit from regular college courses, they might not.
You might want to call admissions office and ask them for information on your case. Since you haven’t technically graduated high school, you might want to apply for regular admission instead of transfer. I would find it hard to believe that just because you’re not applying as a transfer, classes you take outside of UM will be disregarded.
But as to your point about crappy HS stats, I wouldn’t worry about it so much. Even if you apply as a non-transfer, you have a unique resume, and they’ll look at that. But 9 credits alone outside of high school won’t give you a good chance as a transfer. UM states repeatedly that they favor those with 60 or more college credits, so if those “early college” classes don’t count as genuine college credit, I would consider applying as a freshman.
@4NTHEM Where does UM say that they favor those with 60+ credits?
@NYR1995 “Has earned sophomore or junior standing (preferably) with transferable credit earned at a community college or another two- or four-year college or university” 60 credits is generally considered a Junior; 30 credits a sophomore.
This is also a subject discussed on previous transfer-to-UM threads; Rarely do freshman transfers get accepted. Transfer admissions are different from freshman, and they’re going to use your college record as a big part of the decision. The “longer” the college record, the better.
If you haven’t already read through the website, I would do so.
In 2014, 66 students were transferred into UMich as freshman, 435 in sophomore, 413 in junior, and 15 in senior. On the academic record, 55 credits is considered the threshold for junior.
@4NTHEM thank you so much for the help. My high school stats are not even close to the incoming classes though…do you think a 3.6 GPA at Eastern Michigan is good? I’m honestly just so scared to get rejected because I know there are better applicants.
@melanietran1997 I think it depends on the rigor of the courses you took. I’m worried too; frankly my classes don’t closely match UMs at all, coming from a private art school. I’m hoping that UM will note that the school I went to has an incredibly rigorous courseload, and my 3.5 at that school puts me in the top tier of my class.
To be honest, I would imagine that coming from Eastern Michigan gives you an edge over community college transfers. 4-year universities are generally tougher, though dont quote me on that. I think there are probably waaay more community college transfers than 4-year. On the other hand, many community colleges partner with 4-year institutions, so people coming from community college may have taken all the right classes and have a strong incoming resume. Which makes me nervous!
@billcsho where did you find this information?
@4NTHEM They published in the Almanac. Just search for it on umich.edu.
Hi,
I am currently a freshmen at the University of Georgia, hoping to transfer in to UMich for the Winter 2015 term. I intend to major in Mechanical Engineering, and I have reviewed all of the prerequisites outlined on http://www.engin.umich.edu/college/admissions/undergrad/transfer/requirements. I did not apply to UMich my senior year of high school, but I wish that I had. As long as I meet all of the requirements, would I be able to transfer in Winter 2015 as a freshmen? I currently have 32 credit hours from AP exams, and I am taking 15 credit hours this semester, totaling to be 47 after this semester. Is it common to transfer in as a freshmen?
Thanks!
Hey Guys/Gals,
I’m applying to transfer to UM this winter. I’ve read through quite a bit of archived post for UM transfers mainly looking for veterans, so I decided to create an account and make my first post.
I’m stoked to apply to UM. I completed my associates degree. I’m currently finishing my final month of military service. I’m not trying to obsess about my transfer application, but I would be really fortunate to get in. I wish you all good luck and positive thoughts as you’re putting together application for this winter. I’ll stay tuned to the forum over the next couple months.
