notre dame

depends who you ask - michigan is a better academic school while notre dame has notre dame groupies/probably a better network (although more limited)

On nearly all of the objective data, ND has the edge. At one-third the size of Michigan, ND is more selective with a stronger student body (as measured by SAT scores) and also has greater geographic diversity among its students. Michigan has an impressive PA score, but this is an area where left-leaning academics have historically graded ND and its ilk poorly so their low relative standing may not be reflective of the quality of the teaching going on in South Bend. Michigan clearly has a cost advantage over ND for any students from Michigan. Both have terrific school spirit, especially ND with its 3rd place ranking nationally among % of giving alumni. If in-state at Michigan, go to Michigan, otherwise, ND is the better overall choice.

Notre Dame

They are about the same, but I'd give to edge to Notre Dame in terms of only looking at objective data only. Keep in mind however, many of these statistics don't necessarily make a school "better"

In terms of reputation purely, it's clear UMich > Notre Dame (compare only PA, which is technically reputation)

Michigan is better known internationally

Notre Dame (Michigan is a state school after all)

Academically speaking I'm going with Mich as far as quality, but for class size and resources for the average student it's probably Notre Dame.

Michigan

I don't like Notre Dame's style honestly......I would take that Blue every time.

Notre Dame. Mich is a solid state school though.

man I got accepted to U Mich out of state with an honors program offering. It bothers me that U mich is a state school... IF i end up going there, people would always think, "oh you got in in-state. that's so easy." but in reality that is totally not true for an out-of-state applicant like me...

"2006 Football Score:
Notre Dame: 21 Michigan: 47"

you are my hero hawkette

2007 Football Score:
Notre Dame: 10 Michigan: 38 (quote me on it)

By default, Notre Dame b/c its a private

Michigan in everywhere but the South East (suprising amount of ND grads down here)

Michigan by far

Michigan. Its my 1st choice (business). Notre Dame isn't in my top 50 (if i had one). Plus I hate the fact it's catholic

MattEisn,
Glad to help out with the score although I suspect I didn't have hero status with my posting of the football score during the USC-Michigan thread. :)Anyway, I know lots of folks reading these posts like the inclusion of the sports scores and the bragging rights that go with it...at least until next year. Personally, I could not care less who wins between ND and Michigan.

Hawkette you should see my household. My dad loves Notre Dame and I have to go with the Blue. I was talking smack for awhile.

I agree that there may be a disconnect between "quality of teaching" and PA score, and I also believe that students are wrong to put too much stock in PA scores when comparing schools like U-M and Notre Dame.

However, your statement about the left-leaning influence on grading intrigued me. I have always suspected that schools like U-M benefit (not always fairly) from the academic bias towards research. I haven't thought that there was an academic bias against Catholic schools or religiously-affiliated institutions, at least not at Notre Dame's level. (Assuming that is what you meant by the "ilk" of Notre Dame?) What other schools do you think may have been graded poorly due to left-leaning raters?
