University of Michigan chances

I’m going to be a senior this year, but I’m also enrolled in an Early College program in which I get my associates degree on full scholarship just one year after high school. During high school, I have taken honors classes and have been in the Early College since sophomore year, but I haven’t taken any AP classes. My gpa is about 3.8 right now and I took the act once and got a. 27 but I am retaking it in the fall. I made the mistake in high school of not really getting involved in anything other than football, but being in the Early College has opened up new opportunities for me. Through the college I am enrolled in, I have already joined Circle K (I will probably be the president of it this year) and student ambassadors, and I am confident that I will get into Phi Theta Kappa, their honors society. My college gpa is only 3.6 right now but this fall all my college classes will be taught by actual college professors in college classrooms for the first time, and I will do everything I can to get an A in the rest of my classes. I have held a good job for three years now and just got a second job, I have many good references I can use, i volunteer at the special Olympics in our town each year, and went to a leadership camp at CMU. It has been my dream and goal basically since I was in elementary school to go to the University of Michigan, so I am wondering what my chances of getting in would be right now and what I can do to improve those chances.

So, will you apply as a transfer student after the associate degree?

That’s what i was told originally but I talked to Michigan reps and they said I would be applying as a freshman

If you apply right after high school without the associate degree, you would be considered as freshmen even with some college credits. If you get an associate degree, I guess you would be considered a transfer student. The criteria are very different. For freshmen application, your ACT is too low. For transfer, they only care about your college GPA.

The college reps said that even with my associates degree, I would be considered a freshman, I guess that’s how they treat Early College programs.

You should see if you can get credit for any of the college classes you took. Last time we checked, the early college classes could be used for placement, but not for credit. (a few years ago). That may have changed. 3.6 is very respectable for early college where grade inflation is not as prevalent, but you should improve your ACT scores closer to the 30-34 range expected at MIchigan.

Your first semester grades would count if regular admission, but I would consider applying EA and taking the ACT in September. Set your goal as the 75th percentile.

The rep said that most of my credits would transfer, except for the ones taken in a high school classroom taught by a high school teacher which is 15 credit hours for me. And I’m really hoping to get at least a 30 on my act when I retake it this September, and I would do EA fall 2016 since technically I don’t get my high school diploma until I graduate from Early College in 2017.

Sounds like your have plenty of time then. Some of your credits may not transfer because they do not have an equivalent at Michigan (e.g. college algebra). I’d be careful with course selection to make sure that they do. Do you know which college you will be applying to at UM? There are different acceptance criteria for CoE vs LSA vs Taubman.

Michigan doesn’t accept any math less then calculus which is what I’m starting with this fall so that won’t be an issue. & I will be applying to LSA.

Your can find out the transferable credit on their website. It goes by states, schools and courses. If it is not on the list, credit is not accepted.

Whether or not all of my credits transfer, I will still be applying as a freshman to LSA. So considering my current resumé and what I plan on doing, what are my chances of getting in and what can I do to improve those chances? Also, I’m thinking about going into actuarial science so I’m not sure if that affects my chances. I appreciate all the responses

If you are applying as for freshmen admission, your GPA is slightly below admission average while your current ACT is far off. The mid 50 ACT this year is 30-34. You should aim at 30+ on your retake.

I’m pretty confident that I can get a 30+, I scored a 27 with almost no practice for it(another mistake I’ve made in high school) But how important are other factors, like ECs and community involvement? I know someone from my area who got in with a 26 act and a 3.7 gpa

Michigan really emphasizes essays/interest, as they really get to cherry-pick from their applications(>50k applied last cycle). From an OOS perspective, I got in with a 29 ACT this year, so it’s possible to get in with a below average mid 50% ACT percentile, just make sure you have enough redeeming qualities, like an outstanding essay, to ensure you have a solid chance. Being a first gen student really helped my case, and even though I was initially deferred, writing letters of interest helps also, in the event you do get deferred(happens to many applicants). Of course, this is all assuming you are considered as a freshmen app. Best of luck to you! #Victors2020

Hey do you go to ECA? I’m going through the same situation as you, except I wanna apply for fall 2016 and my ACT is much lower. I’m hoping that U of M can see that even if our ACT is lower than the average that we can succeed in college classes because obviously we’re not failing them and passing them with C’s and better.

What’s ECA? The community college I go to is NCMC

Oh lol…I got to Early College Alliance at Eastern Michigan University oops, what classes have you taken at NCMC?

Are you at PHS by any chance? I was there 30 years ago. And then on to UM. Best of luck on continuing the tradition. Study hard and get a 30 on the ACT.

I had about 30 credits of college courses when I applied and they treated me as a freshman. I got credit for all the credits but only to meet gen ed requirements from LSA. And placing out of the intro level classes would have been academic suicide for me anyway. Calc 115 at UM covered everything my prior Calc class covered in the first coup,e weeks.

I do go to PHS. & so far at NCMC I have taken intro to soc, western civ, English 111 and 112, and some college prep class. This fall I’m finally taking clases at the college though
