I want to go to U of M but my high school stats (from before I started early college) are not up to Michigan’s standards:
HS GPA: 3.5 (Freshman and Sophomore year)
ACT: 22
I attended both Washtenaw Middle College at WCC (junior year) and Early College Alliance at Eastern Michigan University:
WCC GPA: 4.0 (16 credits)
EMU GPA: 3.6111 (34 credits) (30+ pending for Fall 2015 and Winter Semster 2016)
I know that all these credits I took were technically still in high school, my graduation is in April 2016, I was thinking to take a spring semester 2016 (9 credits) after high school graduation at EMU so then I would be a transfer student and maybe they won’t focus too much on my low ACT and 2 years of beginning high school.
Do you think this would be a good plan or would it be the same thing? Should I just try and apply as freshmen? Or should I try my transfer plan?
Thoughts and suggestions please, I need help.
wow you guys are such great help…
Haha! I think your case is quite unique. I would apply to Michigan and EMU. Should you get into Michigan, you can go there directly. If you do not get into Michigan, go to EMU and transfer after one year at EMU.
You are considered a freshman applicant at Michigan. While your grades are not typical for UM, they are all college level, not HS. Your ACT is far too low for Michigan, they rarely accept anyone in that range. Is there any reason you cannot take the ACT again in Sept/Oct? Getting your score in the 30-32 range would make admission much more likely.
EMU will accept you automatically as an ECA student, and will apply your ECA classes toward graduation. Michigan will likely give you placement
I would take the following steps:
- Improve your ACT a lot. Register for Sept and Oct for 2 tries . Write some really great essays
- Apply early action to Michigan. Nov1 deadline
- If you are not accepted, attend EMU for a semester and apply for transfer. Pay particular attention to which EMU classes transfer. The Michigan admissions office has a list available on line specific to EMU.
I took the ACT twice, and got a 21, then a 22, I do horrible on it…but thanks for your help, you’re awesome! Do you go to U of M? @TooOld4School
I did, for undergrad + B-school. Now in grad school at Georgia Tech. The good news is despite the overall 26% admit rate at UM, In-state admit rates are nearly double that. CoE is much more difficult, however, and you need both a stellar math scores (and grades) + high ACT/SAT.
