were there different types of deference letters this year, or just one?
Deferred–OOS(California)
LSA
33 ACT
4.0 uw…4.35w
very good ECs…LORs
9 APs…top 5%
I’m assuming UMich uses data to predict acceptance rates depending on state…States with strong Public options likely have a lower yield…therefore, AOs looking for more of a committment??
Just frustrated…grasping for something to comfort!!!
Deferred. Go to an elite private school in NYC and everyone who applied from my school got deferred (about 6 people). Really sad about it because this is my dream school and I know the other people who applied from my school were shooting for Ivies and then saw Michigan as a backup, which isn’t smart because it isn’t a back up for anyone. You could have perfect grades and test scores and still not get in. Good luck to everyone RD!
Ok, asking as a mother who doesn’t want to ask her own daughter at the moment lol… but can you review your common app via the student portal or no? I don’t mean to change anything, just view it? My daughter missed a critical question on the app,I believe.
Hey I’ve been hearing rumors of 2 different deferral letters. Mine was pretty lengthy and talked about sending February grades and how there was a really large and strong application pool. Supposedly, there is another (much shorter one) that stated you’ll be added to the regular decision pool. Can anyone confirm?
Can anybody confirm if anyone actually got denied Early Action?
Our college counselor (private, not through the school) said a couple of her other students got denied, but I’m suspicious if she is telling the truth or just trying to keep us hopeful…
My sons did not mention further grades but his are strong. There are apparently at least two deferral letters.
I think that is a definite risk they are taking. It seems that high stats applicants like that are being deferred, I assume to give them a chance to withdraw. My son is in that boat. I would think the best way to encourage high stats kids to come to Michigan would be not to defer them.
Our letter was the one that asked for strong grades in February, and our GPA is not the best…
What were the two different deferral letters? Are they different in where your chances stand of being accepted?
One of the letters starts with “We are pleased you have applied and impressed by your achievements.” The other starts with “After intense review of your application we have decided we need more information.” Not verbatim but along those lines. There have been more than probably necessary threads on this. Most people agree they don’t make a huge difference in being RD accepted, but imho I find one to be more encouraging to high stats students than the other. Take the differences with a grain of salt, I’ve seen students get in with either letter.
The only thing I’m confused about is LOCI because of the last sentence (the most successful candidates don’t send excess material or whatever). If someone could clarify I’d appreciate it
@MichiganMom2019 Yes, your daughter can log back into the common app and see the final, as submitted, application for each school. On the first “Dashboard” tab, click the college.
To be honest, I definitely get the conflict between “the most successful candidates don’t send excess material…” and the LOCI. I still think though it is to your benefit to send a LOCI because for many that have sent LOCI, they get a reply saying their interest has been noted in your application. And since umich is a school that cares a lot about their yield, I think it would be helpful to get that interest noted by sending a LOCI. This is just my opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt.
@MichiganMom2019 You should be able to login to the common app and see the complete profile. I dont think Umichigan will show you the complete app.
Even my kid got the same lengthy letter asking for Feb Grades. Can anyone share the other letter ?
How do we know whom to send the LOCI to? We have never received an email from a personal admissions counselor…
We got the one that says "We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. "…
@kolatesla1856 they practice yield protection, lots of very strong students were deferred, including my son who had basically the best possible grades and scores and was accepted to Caltech. If UMich is your first choice, you need to show them you’re still interested during the RD round.
can someone post the email that starts with “after intense review of you application” ?
