@tankdog1 @momzilla2D My DD was accepted with nearly identical numbers to you tank: 3.93 unweighted GPA, 30 ACT (superscore 31), 9 APs, OOS. And like you, momzilla, I have seen many posts of deferred students who have better numbers than my DD. I suspect that the chatter about “yield protection” has some validity … these AO’s have been doing it for many years and their database must be incredibly well-developed. They receive 40K applications - and 30K+ of them have 3.75+ unweighted GPA, 5-10 APs/IBs, and 30+ ACT / 1400+ SAT scores - so they know that can put together a full class of students with good/great “numbers”, so they focus on intangibles - which kids are most likely to accept and contribute to the university outside of the classroom: demonstrated level of interest, essays/recs, and ECs. There are just so many kids with 4.0 GPA / 34-35 ACTs who have been deferred … and so many kids with 3.75 GPAs / 31-32 ACTs who have been accepted … I can’t see how there can be any other explanation. So if you have good numbers and have been deferred, I would not think that sending in great first semester senior grades would make much of a difference; but instead if you can show that Michigan is your top school (whether through visits, supplemental information, communications with your AO from you and your HS counselor, etc.), I would think that might be the best way to move you from deferred to accepted through the RD process. Based on recent years, only half of the class is filled through EA. I would expect that half of the deferred EA students will either withdraw or else are really “denials” that lack the numbers/extras; and at least a good portion of the RD applicants are behind you in the “demonstrated level of interest” category. I’d be interested in anyone has real numbers from recent years about % of accepted students from EA, from deferred EA, and from RD.
My kid was also deferred with an ACT 34/4.0/dual enroll OOS student. He applied for SMDT and LSA. Michigan is high on his list but we do need the ability to compare offers. SMDT is highly competitive and auditioned (he is audition for music in february). They also have the ability to give merit money. So we visited campus in September and we’ll be back next month. He is going to update his dual enroll transcript within the next week.
I looked for campus tours when we are visiting campus and there are no general info sessions or tours when we were in town nor were there any last time they were on campus. We did a music specific visit last time we were there and just made a tour using the bus and walking since nothing out of admissions was available. I wish they had more options for campus visitors and maybe someone has some insider info on that.
@pourquoipas from what I’ve heard, quite a few. idk the exact amount, but I know the majority of acceptances for deferred apps come in feb to mid/late March.
Here’s a reply I got for my LOCI. Doesn’t sound too positive.
Dear ,
Thank you for your continued interest in the University of Michigan please be assured that it will be noted in the evaluation of your application. The University received a record breaking 40,000+ early action applications this year, so admission was very competitive. Before we can make a final decision on your application we need to further evaluate the strength of the regular decision applicants, as well as the yield rate of our admitted students to determine if we have space for you in the freshman class. With your 1st semester senior year grades we will continue to assess your application. As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April. Again, admission to the University of Michigan is the most competitive it has ever been this year, so I encourage all deferred students to keep the University of Michigan as an option, but also to also explore the other opportunities available to them. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Interesting…has anyone else gotten a similar (or different) response to their LOCI from their AO?
That is a standard template letter. There are probably a few of them. Just note… They got your Loci is your take away and nothing else
Last year, the message was that they received “almost 40,000” EA applications.
I will say one thing. UMich must have identified schools around the country where yields are higher and where they believe the OOS high stat students will ultimately choose UMich. Our local CA school(s) seems to have fairly good success with placement at UMich during EA.
Please let me know where to send on the LOCI? Thanks
My email did mention sending in 1st-semester grade might improve my chances, but I don’t know if it had any significance.
“As stated in your deferral letter, we will have a final admissions decision for you in early April”
Wish it read “by early April” instead of “in early April” ?
When did you get this? When did you send letter of continued interest?
@sushiritto - My deferred son’s HS in MA had 15 kids get accepted last year and none enrolled. While Michigan is my son’s first choice I am beginning to think that Admissions looks at his school and doubts he will go. We visited and attended info sessions at both LSA and Ross, and my son sent two emails expressing that Michigan was his first choice after the visit and before EA decisions were released. Not sure what else there is to do other than send an LOCI (which will in effect be the third communication of continued interest). He is frustrated but still thinks he will get in based on his scores, grades, etc, and I am trying to get him to accept that it is unlikely that he will get in.
@CaptainRonnie 15 out of 15 kids said “No” to UMich? Holy cow. That’s terrible. I wish you and your son the best of luck. It’s really a wonderful school.
Thanks @sushiritto. I think my S will need it. In prior years kids from his HS have gone, but I was blown away by last year‘s stats. We know that it is a fabulous school, my sister and her husband, as well as lots of my friends went there and he fell in love with Michigan when he visited.
That is stunning that so many kids got accepted and did not attend. Makes you wonder…good luck to your son. He is a good case for sending a note when his grades go in.

Received the same exact response today @mwoody999
my counselor actually heard back from our regional rep and he asked that letters do not be sent unless there is a significant amount of awards/accolades/new developments to consider with your application.
Did everyone get these letters if they sent Continued Interest emails?
