University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

@garamxmasala. Totally get that. I have a kid there. But just addressing the issue of one being easier to get into. It is a very slight margin that LSA is easier then engineering.

To anyone else who got into CoE:
Do you have a package with only LSA information or is there a booklet with CoE info?
Thanks

@Knowsstuff Actually Engineering is much more difficult to get into than LSA. As per Michigan Site, Middle 50% have an ACT of 31-34. https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/student-profile Engineering the Median ACT is 34. So half of the engineers have above 34 and half below. https://www.engin.umich.edu/about/facts/ Both are great schools but the Engineering is a top 10

@kyledad You do realize that the Schools of Nursing, Education, Information, Kinesiology etc. are also included in the overall admission numbers, not just LSA. And at least the reputation of those other schools are that they’re easier to be admitted to than LSA. Ross is also incorporated into those admission numbers as well.

LSA consists of many hyper competitive departments like premed, math, CS, and a whole host of other highly sought after majors. So I beg to differ on the characterization that Engineering is “much more difficult” to get into than LSA.

@sushiritto Ross and the engineering school would only bring the numbers up for the overall school. By the way, CS is run out of the engineering school and the LSA students who perform can attempt to get the degree “if” they meet the requirements. I dont know much about the nursing and other programs but I am sure they are pretty good. If you ask any counselor, at any HS, they will tell you that the engineering and business schools are much more competitive to get accepted. All are great schools. But the facts are the facts. If your child gets into any part of Michigan, they have done well. Go with that

@kyledad High school counselor opinions aren’t facts IMO. I’d personally like to see ACTUAL breakdowns, but I can’t seem to find them anywhere. I’m not saying Engineering (or Ross) isn’t a more difficult admit, just the “much more competitive.”

Here’s an actual fact. According to UMich, “Forty LSA Programs Ranked in the Top Ten, Says U.S. News and World Report”:

https://lsa.umich.edu/lsa/news-events/all-news/lsa-in-the-news/forty-lsa-programs-in-the-top-ten–says-new-u-s–news-rankings.html

An example:

@sushiritto I will go with the stats and the opinions of experts. Congrats to your child with LSA, you should be proud, not justifying or comparing. But I think it is important for people to know the difficulties of getting into different schools at different universities. It is a learning process for all. Thats why I corrected what was posted earlier… I am over it, you?

yuh chill fam
I think Engineering’s harder, a lot of which is from anecdotal experience; if you disagree, coolio
Either way, it doesn’t matter - please don’t go into a flame war

I know there’s not a hard set date but what’s the general latest date to send loci by? We’re waiting on something that we can include in loci but don’t want to get too delayed.

@Bizdock ideally it’s sent before winter break
since you’ve already waited so long, I don’t think a few more weeks will make a difference

@kyledad… An overall LSA student can most likely get into engineering schools at a lot other colleges. If talking OOS LSA vs engineering it is very similar stats. Instate is where LSA is less on stats compared to engineering. This is coming directly from the leads of the engineering admissions staff and at the open house 2 years ago.

At a school like University of Illinois, which has a great engineering school the LSA vs engineering comparison is very large if you look at the avg LSA student there. At Michigan, there is not that much of a drop off is all I am saying

At Michigan many OOS LSA students are getting accepted with unweighted 3.9 gpa with 34 ACT against an instate that might have a 3.8 32/33…

Anyway… It’s an overall hard school to get accepted to and getting harder each year. But it’s a great school that really supports the students If they seek that out . I have been amazed at the opportunities my son has had so far but he made things happen for himself. If you do that. Michigan is behind you 100%.

Let me know when you find the break out for LSA ALONE (not including Nursing, Kinesiology, Education, Information, etc.) so we can compare to Engineering stats. I’d love to see it.

As for high school counselors being experts, opinions vary. Even here on CC. I never said I had a child in LSA, but I’m not a big fan of “conventional wisdom.” People just accept hearsay as fact in all walks of life.

From the lsa.umich.edu “at a glance” page the following stats are provided for enrolled LSA freshmen …admission rate 32%, approx. 51/49% in state/OOS, median unweighted GPA - 3.9, median SAT - 1450, median ACT - 31. These stats are for freshmen matriculating in Fall 2016. We can expect Fall 2018 freshmen LSA admission rate is somewhat lower and stats are somewhat higher.

Engineering admit rate for Fall 2018 is lower (19%), engineering median unweighted GPA for admitted students is 3.9, and median ACT for admitted students is 34…enrolled student median ACT is typically lower (probably a 33).

The takeaway is that engineering admission standards are somewhat higher (this is true in almost all top 30 universities that offer engineering), but not dramatically different from LSA.

@dtrain1027 Thank you!

does anyone know when announcements for merit scholarships come out?

My son was notified of a regent scholarship (the $1500 one for in-state students) on Jan. 8 on the portal; a letter cam in the mail maybe a week later. He just received an email “invitation to apply for other LSA scholarships” with this link: https://lsa.umich.edu/scholarships/prospective-students/four-year-renewable.html. It says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with notifications going out from February through May.

Hey everyone! I’m a freshman at UMich and I was in your place a year ago. Selecting which college you go to is a process and I really wanted to see how life at UMich was as a senior in high school. So I made a video showing a day in the life here! Hopefully it can give you all an idea of what college life is like here!

@apr2000 That was terrific. Thank you for posting it.

@apr2000. Great job. Awesome that you show excersise as part of your day. I think that’s so important.

Where were you with all the graffiti walls? That was cool.

@Knowsstuff

I think it was here:

I need to check it out next time I’m in town.
