University of Michigan Class of 2023 Early Action

Campus Day on Saturday was well worth the 8 hour ride, it is a special place. Unfortunately my daughter has decided she would rather be at Maryland (unless she gets selected by Georgetown on April 1). I am having a hard time accepting her decision to walk away from more than $100,000 from Michigan, especially since Maryland, our home state, offered ZERO. Thanks to all of you on this thread for the advice and info, and thanks to the University of Michigan for the offer.

@madmdtaxpayer wow that must have been the hardest decision! Mind sharing her stats? Thanks.

Admitted to LSA for CS. How much would I have to go back and forth from North and Central? Seems annoying

We just got home from Campus Day, and it was really a great day! Since my S19 is admitted to engineering, we rode the bus up to/and back from North Campus for the first time. It was very easy @MyGPAIsAnL, less of a pain than my son thought it would be. Since students are not housed in dorms by major, some LSA majors live on North Campus, and some on Central Campus, and the same is true for Engineering majors. So, it will depend where you live as to whether or not you will use the bus very often.

@midwest mom9 I also went to Campus day but my tour never led me to North campus sadly

Is there a groupchat for accepted students? On instagram or facebook?

@madmdtaxpayer , did your daughter receive her scholarship money from umich already? if so, when? What school was she admitted to?

Hello, I am OOS parent and want to have your honest opinion on below matter. Thanks in advance.
My D was accepted to school of nursing at Umich and other universities. But Umich is so expensive compared to other universities. The cost difference between Umich and others are more than $80K(no scholarship from Umich but 20K+ scholarship from others). My D visited two schools and loved Umich. Also Umich is high ranked than others. I am not sure investing 80K more is worthy for nursing degree(BSN, MSN). Does a good school matter? I think getting license matters rather than school? what is your advice? thanks.

As much as I love Michigan it is not worth $89,000 extra to go there.

Penn Nursing does not give any merit aid. Still so many go there. So kind of education you get does matter, and the school does matter…

A good school definitely matters, but there are a LOT of good schools. I would factor in the added expense and weigh that against the experience your kid will have. If the less expensive options seem like similar experiences, then why pay more? I wouldn’t pay that much for a ranking. Look beyond that to the actual experience. Great ones are available at all sorts of schools.

I completely agree with other posters…there’s no reason to spend that much more money than necessary on any school. I have a niece who graduated in nursing from a non-flagship state school who had a great internship and now has a fantastic job at the Cleveland Clinic. Just as an example…

zzingoh We are exactly in the same situation. My D was accepted to school of nursing at Umich and other universities. She got some scholarships, but not from UM. Wondering if it is worthy to spend this amount of money.

@gina115. The goal is to graduate with close to zero debt. No need to take on extra debt that you can’t afford to for nursing. It’s a high demand job in the current market. Other things to consider with all the universities your daughter is looking at is other programs she might do with nursing. The university hospital system she will be working in. Michigan’s is a world class health system and I see that as a big advantage but not worth money you can’t easily afford. Plus what if she decided not to pursue nursing after a year, will she be happy where she is at?

Again, Education =good. Debt =bad.

I don’t think it’s worth going into that much debt for a BSN- even for a world class school like Michigan.

My cousin got her BSN from UIC. She commuted and, as an IL resident, paid dirt cheap tuition.

She worked for a few years as an RN, saved some money, and then got her MSN to be a NP from Michigan. Her debt getting a BSN from UIC and then MSN from Michigan was a lot less than if she went to Michigan as an OOS student for both degrees.

Thanks for your response, but I’m not sure if my D will get into a good grad school after getting her BS in nursing in a mediocre university.

@Gina115. Make the decision that is good for you then. Michigan’s name is great but it’s also what you do with it once your there. Being active and making a name for yourself is important for my kids no matter where they go. Just going to Michigan won’t be that much of an advantage if she doesn’t take advantage of what Michigan has to offer. Make sense?

Thanks you all for your response. Does anyone know alumni scholarship for nursing in details? How many awards? How difficult?

4.5 avg, 32 ACT, 12 college credits already with 4.0 avg, current class standing 8 out of 400.

LSA, she has received the offer a grant for $26,511 per year, this came last month some time.
