University of Michigan Deferral...Now What?

Was pretty saddened that I got deferred from U of M as this was my #1 school. My GPA was my biggest weakness for sure (only a 3.65). I have two questions!

  1. Why does it seem like everyone is getting deferred or accepted? Do they never reject people EA?
  2. What do I do to increase my chances of acceptance later? Will a high GPA with 3 AP Classes my 7th semester help at all?

write a letter saying youll go if you get in

  1. It seems very unlikely from what I have seen that they reject people. In the main EA thread some applied with a 24 and he got deferred.
  2. A High GPA will help and you can send your regional admission's counselor an email about your continued interest with umich as your first choice and anything else (higher GPA, awards you've won, ECs)

For a university with freshmen classes this large, a letter of intent likely does little if anything.

@umcoe16 I disagree. The regional admissions counselors want to see letter of willingness to commit so they can fetter out the deferred applicants who will attend or not. If you read the threads of the past few years you will see many instances of deferred applicants who wrote letter of willingness to attend if admitted and those who did not write anything. The deferred applicants who reached out to admissions got IN, and those who did not did NOT get in. And I have seen this at my kids high school during the last few admissions cycles. Michigan has too many applicants (over 50000) who are qualified. They cannot all be admitted. So letters of intent is a way Michigan admissions can distinguish the applicants who will attend versus those who will likely not, thereby helping them to manage their yield better.
