So I got deferred from UofM. Apparently, it was the "better" deferral letter (there's two types supposedly). But I don't understand what my weak spot was. my GPA is 3.75 (unweighted), act 31, lots of extracurriculars, and my essays were pretty good (one of my teachers even said so). What are my chances of being accepted in April? Also, if my GPA is slightly lower than what was before for my Fall Semester grades, should I still send them in to show that I've improved in one subject (a subject that I got a B- and a C+ in last year and now I'll get a B or B+ in?) Thanks so much.

Which “UofM”?

Talk with your guidance counselor about this. If your school regularly sends students to that university, your counselor should be able to advise you on your options, and may be able to contact the admissions office on your behalf.

University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.
I’ll be talking to my counselor tomorrow to see what she thinks too! :)

Did your deferral letter ask to send additional grades? There were actually 3 letters (and several threads about that on this forum), and one does specifically ask for you to send 1st semester grades. Are you in or out of state? Seems that the GPA cut-off for the EA admits, at least for out of state, was a 3.8. It also seemed to depend on the school you were applying for… engineering seemed to have a bit tougher standards than LSA, for example. Good luck to you!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your chances aren’t good. For Fall 2011, 14,659 applicants were wait listed, but only 42 applicants were admitted. If you have your heart set on UofM, your best bet at this point is to try to transfer after your freshman year.

[Wait-listed applicants unlikely to gain entry to University of Michigan](Wait-listed applicants unlikely to gain entry to University of Michigan)

^ None of us have been wait listed yet, we have been deferred. Your statistics are irrelevant at this point.

^ Correct @dfree124! LOTS of stories on here of UM kids who initially got deferred. Your stats look great, I’m betting you will have good news in just a few shorts months. Try to enjoy your holidays and don’t worry too much… :)

Oh, and to answer your other question… if your grades are lower (senioritis, we have a serious case at our house), I wouldn’t send them unless they specifically ask. If they are better, or you get any new awards, honors, etc. then I would definitely forward those to your admissions counselor.

Thanks granipc, I hope you enjoy your holidays too.

Sorry for the mistake. I thought that wait-listed and deferred were the same thing. Good luck!

@granipc Sorry, I didn’t see your posts before! But thank you so much for the support, it helps a lot actually. I’m in-state and I go to an IB school. The deferral letter I got was supposedly one of the really good ones (it didn’t require the semester grades and it had the whole “select group of students…”.
I recently got nominated for an NHS scholarship so I’ll be emailing the admissions counselor about that! Hopefully it helps a lot.

Oh and I applied for LSA by the way.

I think your chances are great actually…I hope to read of your acceptance soon!

Thanks for the reassurance!
Just another question, how important do you think it may be to them that my GPA trend was downward until the last semester of junior year where it went upward for that one semester? I know a downward trend raises a red glad and I’m worried about my first semester of senior year’s GPA showing that the upward trend is continuing…My overall gpa is 3.76ish so it’s decent for uofm, but the trend is what i’m worried about.

Chickdee53 I’m pulling for you!

Is your 3.76 a weighted or unweighted GPA?

What was the difference in the three deferred letters?

3.76 is the unweighted GPA. It might go down to like 3.74 maybe after 1st semester of senior year is over. Somewhat worried about that.

As far as I know, the only main difference is one requires the first semester of senior year grades and the others just suggest you send it in if you think it helps your stance. Some say the type of letter you got doesn’t make a difference at all, but I guess it’s still hopeful since one of them is all like “select group of students” and stuff.

Chickdee53, last year my son was deferred EA with a similar cumulative GPA. He was asked for first semester grades senior year, where he earned a 4.2 GPA. He was admitted to U of M in March, 2012. Check the other threads on this topics - many helpful tips on what to do when you’ve been deferred.

Okay, thank you so much! My worry is first semester senior year grades might not be that great =/
I think they’re looking for an upward trend to continue but ahh might not reach it. But I’ll try, hopefully I get in. Thank you so much :)

I sent an email to the admissions counselor for region… do they usually reply back or just keep it in their records?
