University of Michigan Deferral Thread EA 2019

From what I’ve heard, there is no such thing as good/bad deferral letter.

Yeah there isn’t anything like a good or bad deferral letter.
They have mentioned it on their tumblr page …
“There is no good/bad deferral letter despite what college confidential says”

Do u guys think if I submit my Mid-Year Report tomorrow, it will be evaluated in time for the first batch of decisions on Jan. 30th?

the first batch of decisions- jan 30th- may be an urban myth…does anyone have anything definitive?

How are you guys going to send it? via common app? My school sends my mid year report in mid to late February.

We send ours through Parchment. We’re only just now taking semester 1 finals, though, so I don’t think we could be included in a late January round of decisions.

Are some decisions out?

Hey guys could use some advice or something! So I was just about to send another email to my regional counselor about continued interest since she never replied to the one I sent December 26. But today I just got an email from Kelly Cox (the associate director) who gave me the automated “we had a record number of early action apps, we expect to release final decisions by april, yada yada.” She didn’t say she would make note of my interest though. Should I still reach out to my regional counselor again? Also, why would Kelly Cox respond and not my regional counselor?

Expect decisions to begin to be released next week…(guessing friday, 1/30)

Per UMich Tumblr: “We’ve gotten SOOO many questions about this and the answer for everyone, regular decision AND EA deferred applicants is: by mid-April. We’re sorry (really, truly, honestly) that we can’t be more specific than that. Basically decisions are going to go out in waves over the next ~10 weeks and where you fall in that cycle of decision making is going to depend on a wide variety of things (your strength as a candidate, your school/college of choice, auditions/portfolio reviewing, etc etc etc).”

I have received and sent my letters about 8 times from late December to this month… I am eager to get in… Michigan is like my top idol star…

Just received a response about my letter of continued interest that I sent on December 24.

@Benf207‌ , what did your response sound like. Mine seemed like it was just copied/pasted.

@nagintapls "Thank you for your email. I appreciate receiving updated information on your academic aspirations.

This communication was imaged to your Fall 2015 application materials for the College of Engineering and your continued interest in the University of Michigan has been noted. "

Hello, I applied EA to Michigan and was also deferred. I have been an extreme athletic fan of the university my entire life so this has been tough news for me.

I have a 4.0 unweigted GPA and I scored a 28 composite on my ACT. I will be taking the February ACT again even though I realize that this may be a little late and may not help me at all even if I score higher than in the past. I am ranked 1/140 in my class. I also had very good RCs. I am planning on going into business and both my RCs were CEOs of large corporations, and one of them was even a long term major donor to U of M.

I understand how all you guys feel. This is very difficult but all we can do now it be patient and keep are fingers crossed.

If anybody has any tips for me I would appreciate it!

I never got a reply from my counselor! I chatted with someone on the admissions chat thing online and they told me that there’s no letter of interest on my file… They told me to send another letter to the ecredentials email and to check back within a week to see if they received it. It’s so irritating how that letter could help me in this process, yet they didn’t even receive it the first time. Hopefully they got my second one.

So, I applied EA to the engineering school back in October, and I got deffered. I go to an extremely rigorous prep school and practically half of my school goes to Michigan every year. I have a good GPA and ACT and I took the most challenging courses available at my school. I have a pretty good legacy (i.e. my mom went to Law School there and my sister graduated last year and is currently in grad school there). I sort of thought I was going there since like 8th grade. I didn’t even apply to any other schools until I got deffered. I know multiple people from my school who are less qualified than me, but got into the LS&A school. The only person I know who got into the Engineering school, got a 36 on her ACT, and she isn’t even going to Michigan. Before I applied, I talked to my counselor about which school to apply to. She said that if I get deffered, I might be able to switch my application over to LS&A. Sure enough I got deffered, and I was unsure if engineering was for sure what I wanted to study anyway. I emailed my regional counselor asking to have my application transferred to LS&A. When she didn’t respond, I talked to my school counselor again, who happens to have a very good relationship with the regional counselor, she then emailed her on my behalf. I haven’t heard a response yet, but I did some research, and I read somewhere that students were not allowed to transfer their apps. However, I don’t know how trustworthy that website was. I never exactly sent a Letter of interest, but it was sort of implied from the first letter I sent. I would feel much more confident about getting accepted if I knew that my application was officially switched over to LS&A. Should I send another official letter of interest to someone other than my regional counselor? Should I email her again? My first semester grades were sent last week and I did pretty well, but I am still extremely nervous. I was reading some of the earlier posts on here, and I discovered that I received the “good” defferal letter. Does this actually mean anything?

@rusayingagapyear I actually was in the same situation as you are. I originally applied to the CoE, unsure if I wanted to study engineering, and was deferred. I emailed my counselor to ask about the differences in the reviews of the colleges, and she said the reviews are very similar and that there is more emphasis on math and science classes for engineering. She then gave me instructions on how to switch my application to LSA. Long story short, I did end up switching my application. You have to rewrite your essay and send it to ecredentials@umich.edu along with your request. However, you can only do this if the deadline for applications has not passed. Since the deadline is today, this means you have about 10 minutes to send that email with your new essay. Maybe if you send it tonight before admissions checks weekend emails they will still process your request though. If you do want to switch your application, you probably need to have that email sent ASAP. They say that review is the same across all colleges, but after doing a ton of research I have come to the conclusion that you have better odds of getting into LSA than the CoE if you do not have outstanding math/science grades or extracurriculars. Also, taking the time to rewrite your essay demonstrates that you really do care about Michigan. Personally, I feel much more optimistic now that my application has been switched to LSA, and I am also more interested in the majors within that college. I am happy to answer any other questions you have about the process since I have recently been through it myself. I wish you the best of luck!

Guys…it is possible to change applications from CoE to LSA, since I successfully did it and got in, but MAKE SURE you write exactly why UMich LSA is a BETTER choice than CoE, not just a back-up to CoE. I’ve talked to my Admissions Officer about this and she said I got in mainly because my updated essay for LSA was very in depth about LSA and not CoE…and that I would have got rejected they felt I was switching just for an “easier” admissions process.

SO, if you feel that LSA is ACTUALLY a better choice for you, switch, but make sure you state EXACTLY why you switched (and it can’t be “easier to get in”). Otherwise, they can see through your app pretty easily and then you’ll be rejected anyway.

Just my 2 dollars.

EDIT: Also, I was told DIRECTLY from the admissions officer there was no ‘good’ deferral letter, but do what with that information you will.

I emailed ecredentials@umich.edu with my request to have my application switched and attached my new essay. I then sent another in depth letter explaining why I wanted my application switched. I fear it might be too late considering the deadline was yesterday, but I have to try. I just wish my regional counselor would have replied to me with this information when I originally contacted her. Then, I could have done this weeks ago.

Yes, I completely agree with @berkvard. It has to be very clear that you are making the switch because LSA is a better fit for you, as it should be. After all, what is the point of spending thousands of dollars on tuition if you’re not even studying what you want to study? I emailed my counselor after switching my app and explained to her that it was by no means a ploy to increase my admissions chances and that I realized I want to switch my career goals and LSA offers more options for what I want to study. @rusayingagapyear‌ I hope they will process your request! If they do not then at least you know you did everything that you could possibly do, and I’m sure it will all work out fine in the end.
