University of Michigan - Deferral Thread

3.66 gpa, somewhat downward trend
28 ACT - bad, I know
Very rigorous Junior year schedule, pretty rigorous Senior year schedule
Total of 5 AP’s: US, Physics B, Chem - Junior, Calc BC, Phyics C - Senior (How are non-AP college courses treated?)
Been in honors math since sophomore year.
No awards
Cross country runner turned soccer player senior year
An adequate amount of EC’s including Vice President of Math Team
Got the “good” deferral letter

Deferred - 3.9GPA, class rank 6%, 5 AP’s, Hispanic, Spanish speaking, from ann arbor, legacy, 3 varsity sports…devastated
Got the posted deferred letter with family part included

The posted letter? What does that mean? Multiple were posted.

I got the letter @Brifreis got with the “family ties” language…I’m gonna check WA

Nothing new in my WA like @CKTTCWW. Although I did apply a day before the due date. I’m hoping they just need more time.

@Arborite I’m going to ignore all reason and hope that since my school sent in my stuff so late, that the deferral is due to my application being completed late. Denial Ho!

I got deferred. Anyone think they could tell me why?

wGPA: 4.4
ACT: 35
Double alumni (both parents)
Took 6 APs
Good ECs and recs
Varsity Sports
Competitive high school oos

Very confused.

Anyone want to help me out?
Stats: act - 34 (superscore is 35)
3.8 uw
Lots of ECs: mock trial captain, 150+ volunteering, nhs president, studied quantum physics at Cambridge university in England, quil and scroll jounalism international honors, best column award in northwest region from
Scholastic awards, some other stuff.

Applied to LSA as a male. What should I do next? Take sat 2s? Retake ACT for higher score? Write a letter? Michigan is my number one as they have my ideal major (cognitive science). I am willing to turn down scholarships from other great schools to go to
Michigan. I’ve never been this upset… Someone help

Some people are getting deferred while other people are getting told to send grades at the end of the trimester/semester for further information on their application. Which is better? Why did they send these two separate messages if they both are basically a deferral?

great question -

From Mich this is the trend I’m seeing - legacy, ACT >30, early (before Oct 1 application submission), top 10%. The chances look good these folks got in. Rest of us deferred due to time. I think a lot of people will hear in a few weeks. didn’t that happen last year?

@MichATheart - I bet you get in

so i got deferred, and has been told “Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available.”

im an international student, and my fall grade has already been uploaded on Common App already.
Does anyone know if i should send my grade separately by email or mail, even if you did so on Common app?

thanks!

“Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2013. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.”

I think this “deferral” letter sounds better though

I got deferred at LSA this morning and I’m okay with it. UMich is my dream school, but it’s also a reach. I have poor grades from Freshman year and it hinders my cumulative GPA.
Really good SAT score - 2200
International student from Singapore
4 APs (Fives in both AP Lang & AP Human Geo)
Strong EC commitment and leadership in dance, service clubs too
Fluent in two languages
LOTS of legacy

I got the “good” deferral letter, with mentions of family ties.
What sort of percentages do you guys think they’ll take of us? I’ve only heard of acceptances/deferrals.

In the mean time, GO BLUE! :)

Is the one with “family ties” a better letter? Or it’s just because they have relatives at or working for Umich?

I think the one asking for additional resources isn’t good. They’re saying they haven’t seen enough of you to make up their mind.

@michiganluvr I hate to break it to you but that doesn’t sound like the good deferral letter. The good one states that they are “impressed with your achievements.” However, that is not saying that you won’t get in. Good luck!

In the deferral email, they said:

“While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2014.”

If it is true that they ran out of time along with the increased number of applicants, do you think they will start sending out “Final Admissions Decisions” between now and April?
Hypothetically, could they start sending out “Final Decisions” to deferred students starting in say… mid-January?

Am I the only person in all the 30k plus of applications that shows their WA account view credentials page as requiring 7th semester grades? Sorry but haven’t heard and decision - admit or defer yet. Only thing that has changed in past 24 hours is my required materials on WA
