University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

^ That would be the way I would recommend too,

The only thing that throws me off is that UMich said that they only want what they ask for, and they’ve only asked for my first semester grades (5 A’s btw with 4 AP classes), so I’m still not sure if I should send a LOCI. There really isn’t a lot more I can really say.

By LOCI, I just meant a simple email thanking them for a continued consideration of your application, and telling them that you are still interested in their school. You could also throw in there the fact that you just sent your grades over. That should be fine. I think that when they say they don’t want “additional information,” I think they mean they don’t want you to write a whole new why Michigan essay or give them any updates to your activities, and things like that.

Alright. I’ll consider sending a LOCI, but my counselor doesn’t send midyear reports till the last week of january, so is that too late to send one or no?

@hunter21 Congrats on your acceptances! I am also a chemical engineering major. I agree with UIUC. It is a great school. University of Wisconsin and University of Minnesota work as well. They are very similar to U Michigan ranking wise and feel wise.

For ChemE, Minnesota is a bit higher in ranking and Wisconsin is lower when compared with UMich. The feel of the campus are similar though. The net CoA are very different though. Minnesota is a lot cheaper particularly for OOS. Wisconsin would have slightly lower CoA but much less financial aid.

@hunter21: Look at University of Delaware and NC State for chemical engineering, also. January 15 deadlines for RD applications.

@jj1999 I think it should be fine to send the grades end of Jan. The deferral email says grades available before mid Feb and I don’t think they would review the deferred applications again before mid February.

@ak200008 alright, thanks. I should send my LOCI a bit after my grades come out then.

According to the EA discussion from last year, some deferred decisions (for both LSA and CoE) started to be released as early as February 10th.

Deferred from LSA
In state
1390 SAT
3.95 GPA but freshman year killed me
9 AP classes
Sister is in her 3rd year at Ross
Attended U of M camps for my major(Computer Science)
Extracurriculars relating to my major(including job shadows at Ford)
Not sure when to go from here as I was expecting to be deferred from my poor test scores. Planning on writing a LOCI but not sure if I should do it at a certain time. My sister also talked about possibly going to my regional admission directors office and possibly having a talk. Any advice

U of M is definitely my #1 school as I’ve been raised around attending my entire life

@hunter21 if you are debating between the University of Minnesota and UW-Madison, MADISON. I am a Minnesota resident and my older sister attends Madison, and I have spent a lot of time on both campuses over the years. In terms of student experience on campus, I cannot recommend Madison more highly. The U of M is fine, but the campus is extremely spread out and doesn’t have a central campus feel. Badger spirit is unbeatable, and the campus itself is essentially one big college town. As someone who has been admitted to both places, I can tell you that the second I heard from Madison, the U was out of the running for me. My sister already did bio research as a freshmen, and she’s loved every second of her last two years. As you can tell from the size of this paragraph, I really, really believe that UW-Madison is the clear choice between those two. I might see you there if this Michigan thing doesn’t pan out for either of us!

Ha, ha. Very enjoyable post.

If you applied to a competitive major (e.g. engineering, etc.), then the deferral is not unusual.

@Bella2018 I also got accepted to Madison in EA but deferred at Michigan. I am out of state for Wisconsin. I thought I would qualify for some sort of merit aid based on my high stats. However more I read about Madison it looks like they never give any merit aid for OOS students. Is that true?

@GoBadgers2020 I can’t speak for everyone, but my sister, who had a 34 ACT and a ~3.9 GPA, did not receive any merit-based aid, nor did her friend with a 32 and a 4.3. Both were Minnesota kids, so they have tuition reciprocity, which may have had something to do with it. I think that if Madison did offer merit-based aid for OOS, they would have certainly qualified for it, so my guess is no.

Madison does offer merit scholarships to some OOS students but very limited and it requires separated application after admission. Minnesota offered multiple scholarships to my D very early in the game without even asking. At the end Umich is still cheaper for my D from in-state, but Minnesota was not far off after the larger scholarships.

What do you think the average SAT and GPA is for the college of engineering at UMich? I just want an estimate of what my chances are. And for the LOCI, should I not send updates on what I have been doing?

The average GPA for admission has been 3.9 for years. As it only show one digit after decimal, we only know it is below 3.95. But the average GPA in LSA increased 0.04 during the time CoE reported the same average. For SAT score, the new stat is not available yet. It should be close to 1500 as it was 1440 in LSA last year.
