University of Michigan Deferred Applicants Class of 2022

No one can.

Here is a good blog about being deferred from the admission head at Georgia Tech. His blogs will put this into perspective.

@mikado98765 Don’t waste time to chase after the unanswerable question. Don’t waste time in wishful thinking on the “maybe”. There is a chance you will still get the “Y” decision at the end with UMich, but you must prepare for the worst. Use the remaining days of 2017 to figure out if you need to put in any new applications. It is highly unlikely any mid-term update will materially move the “academic needle” in your profile, and therefore, whatever the reason for your defer, there isn’t much you could do at this point other than wait. Meanwhile, make sure you have backup plans. Good luck.

I applied to quite a bit of university’s, but UMich is definitely number one! The more I realize it, the less I want to attend the other colleges I applied and got accepted to. Does anyone, specifically OOS students, have any reccomendations of some pretty, yet superior, colleges for chemical and/or environmental engineering?

@ferry Hi ferry, I had a 3.7 unweighted GPA and 34, and I will finish high school with 11 APs, which is very similar to your son’s scores. I was accepted LSA early. Are you out of state or in-state? Are you engineering or LSA? Out of state will make it much harder, and engineering will make it harder as well. Many applicants are accepted regular decision, good luck!

I just want to ensure I am still going to attend a place I will be excited to go to if UMich does not work out for me

I wouldn’t look too far. Michigan Tech has well regarded Environmental. Head to the UP for a year or two and transfer to UofM if you don’t get accepted by April. The first year is pretty identical everywhere.

mikado98765. Hopefully your essays showed your enthusiastic desire to attend Michigan. In the meanwhile, don’t be too surprised if you get accepted early on in the RD process. With those stats and being instate, Iwould be disappointed if you didn’t ultimately gain admittance. The state of Michigan needs students like you to stay instate!

Hunter21, would you mind listing the programs you got accepted to so we don’t suggest the same programs?

Thank you so much. We are in Ann Arbor in state and he applied for LAS. Happy holidays and good luck.

@Knowsstuff I got into UF, Kentucky, MSU, LSU, and Wayne. I’m sending in my Cornell app in a couple days.

I sent a LOCI and will send senior 1st semester grades which shows a 1.2 point increase in GPA (from 94.44 to 95.625) despite taking 2 more APs (I’m taking 5 senior year). Is there anything else I can do or do I just have to wait?

Well first congratulations on great school acceptances. Wayne is my Alma mater. Seems to be a hot school the last few years. But I live in Chicago and talk to people that have graduated or have been in the workforce a few years from various engineering programs. I am a doctor and have a pretty young clientele. The schools that keep coming up are of course University of Illinois(both Champaign and Chicago) and Northwestern but even more so is Michigan State University and University of Minnesota and get ready… Iowa State University. Seems the kids from Iowa State love their school spirit and all get great jobs with multiple offers. I really don’t look at rank and really like Michigan States program and especially their honors program. There are a ton of them working in Chicago.

My daughter has a 36 ACT and 4.5 WGPA. She was deferred Computer Science COE - we are out of state. Does she even stand a chance? Can she switch to LAS. Michigan is her first choice school.

I’m also wondering if LSA would be better. I want to get in so bad!

I dont think you can just change what you are applying to. You would have to drop out and reapply. Don’t think that makes any sense. Over 80% of applicants are deferred. This is just part of the process. Remember, just because people were accepted does not mean that they are going. Some will choose other schools. Many will find out they can’t afford it etc. Etc. That opens up more spots.

Sorry to ask again, I just really would appreciate your help!

Contact admission office. They can change you to LSA if you really want to. However, your application cannot be changed and you will have the same “why Michigan essay”.
@Knowsstuff Around 70% OOS students would decline the admission offer and that has been taken into account already. That’s why they admit ~16000 for a freshmen class of 7000. It does not open up more spots by this unless the yield rate is lower than their expectation. In that case, they will admit some from the waitlist.

@billcsho thx for the explanation. I knew that but just presented it incorrectly.

I received this message from UMich http://prntscr.com/hsa1lx should I send a LOCI to them? And if so, when?

Yes. I think you should probably send a LOCI to any school you get deferred from to show your continued interest. As a matter of when, I think for Umich, it would be great to send your LOCI right after you send your first-semester senior grades. This way, you can also let them know that your grades were just sent in.
