This is NOT to all of those deferred by any means. This is to those who were deferred claiming that their ACT score makes them superior to accepted students.
For those of you saying mediocre students were accepted EA, or questioning why people with ACT scores of 29-32 were accepted, I’m just wondering why I’ve seen a number of students on here accepted with scores higher than that–in the 33 plus range? Secondly, have you ever considered that the ACT just might not be the only factor considered in admitting a student? I absolutely love that most of you complaining about others getting in only list your ACT scores and then bash the university for admitting students with lower scores! What about your GPA–how is it? And how about your essay? Did your sense of entitlement shine through in that, too? Or did you save that for College Confidential? And I just love how you are more upset about the fact that others got in than the fact that you didn’t get in…it blows my mind. Just some thoughts.
I am an out of state applicant from far west Texas. I received my acceptance message via e-mail yesterday. I really thought that I would get rejected seeing as I only scored a 30 on the ACT. I was the President of my school’s BPA Club and Captain of the UIL Current Issues & Events team. I completed over 280 hours of community service. Rank was 7 out of 624. I am Hispanic, so that may have helped. Overall, I think my essays truly showed the admissions people who I really am. Congratulations to all those who got accepted. For those who got rejected or deferred, know that your hard work has not failed: you will still be successful wherever you choose to go. There is no rhyme or reason to college admissions.
The best things to do for college applications are to do your best and be yourself.
@james1998iq You sound like a truly remarkable student. In regards to your worries, I must ask: were you being yourself in your essays and did you write with passion?
@izr2016 Worry not, for you will succeed no matter where you choose to go. Your hard work over the last four years will not go to waste. There is still hope! Hard work and integrity will always bring success.
I received my decision via e-mail right after I finished watching Star Wars the Force Awakens. I was sad after what happened in the movie (no spoilers), but finding out I got accepted changed my mood. LOL
So I should wait for a definitive email before making assumptions?
@monchengladbach You being sad about the ending is already a spoiler…
Nothing like finding out you got to deferred to a school when you’re literally in the car on the way to said school to pick up your sister who goes to law school at said school… Oh well, there’s still hope (33 ACT 3.94 uw OOS).
Congrats to all those accepted though! And don’t be too upset deferrals, there’s still hope!
@AnnArborite Hi idk if your comment was directed to me or not but yeah decisions can start coming out as early as February, at least for us they did. I was accepted on February 6th and that was the first batch of decisions that came out since Early Action decisions. A letter of continued interest is always good, it does not have to be anything long or fancy, but it can’t hurt you so you should definitely do it because it can end up helping you. As an oos student who had less impressive credentials (30 ACT, 4.0 GPA) than the people on CC last year, I think the letter helped me immensely because to this day I don’t know how I got in haha. Michigan wants to see your interest so whatever way you can show it should help you.
Of all the places to get star wars spoilers. Thanks a million!
So many people are talking in circles. Admissions officers are given a quota for your HS. If they accept 10 students and historically 10 attend, they know they’re getting 10. So you’re competing with your classmates. Who has the best scores, who in this particular school will help make the incoming class more well rounded, etc. I know plenty of people who expressed great interest in Michigan, wrote letters to their admissions officer, and still got rejected. I said it before and I’ll say it again. have a psychological back up plan. There are kids on cc last year who got denied in March and April who are having the time of their lives at a Michigan State, Wash U, UTexas, YALE, UCLA, USC, Notre Dame, UNC, Northwestern, NYU, … There are incredible colleges all over, not just in Ann Arbor. So much hype here. Plus, 80% of you cc posters are parents. I read a few where moms and dads were checking the kids email before the kid. parents should know their boundaries and live their own lives.
What kind of defer letters did you get? Also what are your stats? I think by doing these we can figure out which are the “good” defer letters and which ones are not. I will start first
Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2016. We are pleased that you have applied and are impressed with your achievements. However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.
While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2016.
Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. Please refer to the website https://umich.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2080 for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next.
We hope your interest in Michigan continues. You have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful end of your senior year.
GPA: around 3.95
SAT: 2240
SAT subjects: 800 math 2, 800 chinese, 790 physics, 770 chem
I got the same letter as @123awefafwe
GPA: 3.94 uw (using UM recalculation)
ACT: 33
Haha sorry, my device bugged out so for some reason the @Sando97 didn’t show up. I’m glad to hear they start releasing decisions so early, hopefully I’ll be in one of the earlier batches they let in.
when do we get the official admit letter in the mail?
@GoBlue217 Do you think my 1 would hurt me more than my 5’s would bring me up? I know sending just my 5’s looks dishonest so i opted to not send any and leave them guessing than have my 1 destroy me. Tough situation should’ve tried, but it’s too late now. Would it help if I tell them im relearning java and python on my own this year? How do i send a letter of intent?
@GoPack87 Just curious what the UM Grade Recaulclation is? Do you know the specifics? Thanks.
Just curious, I was deferred as many of us here, but what I haven’t seen is many people posting about rejections? (Though I probably wouldn’t rush to the computer to post that if I was denied…) My question is, do they defer almost everyone who does EA?
Michigan is my first choice. Actually my only choice!
@aayd183 I don’t think it will hurt you. I got in and failed all three of my AP exams last year (2, 2, 1). However, I did not send them the scores because they sucked.
