I have recently submitted my application to the University of Michigan under the Early Action plan, but I am a little unsure about how the university's admission process works. Early Action decisions are promised by December 24, but are the released on a rolling basis? Are regular decisions released on a rolling basis?

You will hear by Dec 24th. At that point you will be accepted, deferred or rejected. Deferrals will then be accepted, rejected or further deferred (waiting list) from that point on. I can’t remember the date but I think they have until around mid-April before they have completed acceptances and start a wait list. The wait list is essentially a no.

That’s pretty accurate ^^in the next several weeks you’ll get via e-mail information about how to access web pages and also likely an e-mail that will confirm that all your application pieces were received by the due date and that you are being considered for early action. How they release decisions, if the past couple years are any indication, is over the course of several days. Michigan has not historically notified everyone on the same day probably because of the sheer volume. If you watch this forum in December you will probably see posts where kids start announcing that they have gotten an e-mail or a letter.

momofthreeboys, are you sure this is how it’s always been? I was recently at an info session and an admissions counselor said that they hold onto all decisions and release them on the same day. Not sure which would be better…I just hope I get in…

My daughter applied early action in mid-September of 2009 in her sr. year. She received her acceptance letter mid-November (a surprise, as we were anticipating a decision closer to Christmas). Many of her classmates who waited until the last day of the early action deadline received decisions closer to Christmas (as a matter of fact, one decision came Christmas Eve, so that Mom wrapped up the letter and put under the tree). One of my daughter’s friends waited to apply until the first week of November (after early action deadline) to the college of engineering. He was initially deferred in January but then received an acceptance letter in late February. So, it truly does seem to be a “rolling admissions” process. My son just completed his application to the college of engineering on October 31. We haven’t heard a thing yet, but will certainly post when we do hear!

CollegeParanoia…Here is a link to (one of) the Class of 2016 EA Acceptance threads.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1251122-official-class-2016-university-michigan-ea-decisions-thread.html

If you’ve got a LOT of time, you can read through and see how and when the decisions were released last year. To save some time, the first 70 or so pages are filled with “I heard that” or “my friend knows someone in admissions”, etc. etc. Don’t buy into any of it. Every year people start rumors about when Admissions will start releasing decisions and then panic when the supposed release date/time passes with no activity.

Glancing through it looks like Dec 16th was when the first decisions started coming out, but that doesn’t mean the date will remain the same this year. If you read through the posts, you’ll also see that everyone tries to find a pattern in the decision releases; IS versus OOS, alphabetical by name, alphabetical by state, shoe size…whatever. There may be some trends (mostly acceptances on one day, mostly deferrals on another, etc.) but there aren’t any absolutes. I know it’s hard to be patient, and it’s hard not to freak out when others start receiving info and you maybe haven’t heard anything yet. It’s not a great process…but it is what it is and it’s probably not going to be any better this year.

Read through the thread and you’ll see what I mean. You can pretty much see all 7 stages in the grief process for some of the posters. Being forewarned is being forearmed, so at least you’ll know what to expect. Good Luck to you!!

atomicannon, the process used in fall of 2009 was not used in 2010 or 2011.

The most recent process has been for all of the decisions to be released in December - I believe sometime between December 15 and December 23. They are released by mass e-maill all at once, but all at once can take them two to three business days because of the volume. I believe the school sends an email to all of the applicants in advance of the release of the decisions.

You will defnitely know when they are coming out if you pay attention to cc, Facebook or similar social media.

Thanks for the clarification, res ispa. It seems like yesterday we were waiting for my daughter’s decision. Now the waiting is in full swing again for my son!

I graduated from U of M in 1991. Does anyone know if legacy is considered by U of M? Hoping so for my son’s sake!

Good luck everyone and Go Blue!

Legacy is considered but it is only a minor factor.

Virtually all EA decisions are sent out within a 24 hour period. Only three years ago, the University released acceptances in batches starting sometime in early November, but that is no longer the case. Most decisions will be sent out around December 20.

This is purely anecdotal, and in my children’s cases, where they both applied EA they each received their acceptances via email (in the afternoon, because I remember they were in school when they got the news) as follows:

Daughter accepted to Fall 2007: Friday, December 14

Son accepted to Fall 2011: Friday, December 16

Whether they will follow this process this fall, who knows, but at least in the last few years they began sending acceptances in mid-December through 12/24 and they tend to come out in batches on a Friday.
