University of Michigan GPA Recalculation

How does the UMich recalculate the high school GPA? Does UMich include all 4 years? (or I would say from freshman until the first semester of senior). Also, I am attending to Catholic high school, and the theology is mandatory. Does the UMich count “non-academic” classes’ grades into the GPA calculation?

All classes count from all 4 years. An A+, A, and A- are all counted as 4.0s. A B+, B, and B- are all counted as 3.0s. This goes on. Down to an F (0).
So if you only take 4 classes, and you get an A-, a B+, an A, and a D, your GPA would be calculated as follows: (4+3+4+1)/4 = 3.0 GPA.

UM also does not use weighting, and so if your transcript shows a “weighted” GPA they recalculate it.

On their admissions tumblr, they say they “unweight AND recalculate” GPAs. Are you sure they don’t eliminate grades for PE and Choir and Band and other “non academic” subjects and then recalculate?

I’m not 100% sure, but I don’t think they remove them… I’m pretty sure they just recalculate like I said:
A: 4.0 (A+, A, A-)
B: 3.0 (B+, B, B- )
C: 2.0 (etc)
D: 1.0 (etc)
E/F: 0.0

It’s our college counsellors understanding that they throw out PE grades. Rest are just unweighted and recalculated. Apparently they have had several students go from a 3.66 GPA (a- at our school ) to a 3.95 Michigan GPA. She said it killed her though to have to tell a student with a combo of b+ and solid A grades that he was going from a 3.88 to a 3.66 under Mich recalculation.

Music grades are counted. PE isn’t

@excanuck99 Would you post your source?

If the school gives credit for PE, then U-M will include it in their GPA calculation. Some schools list a grade for PE but award it no credits on the transcript. That’s the only time it will be excluded.

Also, U-M only rounds to one decimal place. So a calculation of 3.66 would be entered as 3.7. However, a 3.95-3.99 is never rounded up to 4.0. Those will stay as 3.9. Only a transcript with all A (and/or A-) will be calculated as a 4.0.

undergraduate admissions. “Information for Guidance Counsellors”. Ask your guidance counsellor. Mine had a document from UM.

Since the return of GPA recalculation at UMich, I have not found any official information. I guess I will ask the admission office next month when I see them again.

Confusing. We are graded on an 11 point scale. We don’t have donors or AP courses (private school) I put 3.8 as that is what my counsellor suggested. I was accepted but have no hooks and am OOS and on some financial aid at my high school.

I think they will calculate them multiple ways: with and without the +'s and -'s, with only the academic courses and with everything. With current technology, it is not that much work to perform such recalculations.

Does Michigan use full year grades or semester grades? For example, if a student got a B+ and an A in a full year class for an A- average, would that be a 4 or a 3+4/2= 3.5 for the class?

^ I think it depends on how it is shown on your transcript.
