University of Michigan Housing options?

My son is going to Umich - Engineering (Computer Science) and we are wondering what would be the best housing option for him?

  1. Seems like Umich has three campuses: Central Campus, the Hill and North Campus, for Engineering students which housing is convenient?
  2. Which hall in that campus would be good?
  3. Any pros/cons for Room type :“B”, “C” or “D”
  4. Any do or do not’s from your experience?

Any advise will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I do not know what room types B, C, or D are off the top of my head, but here are the “desirable” first-year dorms in each area (remember, this is subjective, I am just going by popularity):

Hill: Mosher-Jordan Hall (MoJo), Couzens, Alice Lloyd, Markley (lacks in amenities severely, but has the best social scene if partying is your thing), maybe Oxford if you want to be close to Greek Houses, some Washtenaw Churches, and Hillel - Markley and Oxford lack in amenities such as air conditioning among other things

Central: West Squad, South Quad (although no air conditioning, but has great other amenities, probably the best dining hall on campus - although you can swipe into any dining hall), East Quad (although some people avoid this because of the “RC culture/vibe”)

North: No dorm here is considered desirable, but Baits is probably the worst. Northwood might be okay if you prefer quiet/remoteness and an apartment setup (although minimal amenities and mostly no air conditioning).

Baits gets a bad rep: It does have it’s own perks - You get your own shared bathroom, rather than a communal one. It’s quiet for studying with a bus stop right there to go anywhere else to party at any time - so people tend to trash and throw up in everyone else’s building - not yours at 3am LOL

No matter where you live, you will gravitate towards where you want to be and spend your time there regardless. The B, C, D, if I remember, relates to pricing. Unless you applied and are accepted to a RC, your guaranteed housing assignment is lottery based.

The Hill is not really a campus. It’s just an area of Central Campus.

You don’t get to choose your dorm. You get placed in one randomly, unless you are in a living-learning community.

@brantly

I know the Hill not a campus. I was talking about residential neighborhoods/areas. When it comes to housing, it is usually divided as its own neighborhood (although still considered central) since it is pretty far away from the rest of Central Campus housing.

See for yourself, even the housing website divides into “Central, Hill, North”. These are the same designations I used.

@yikesyikesyikes I was responding to the OP.

You’ve probably figured this out by now, but unless your son is in an MLC or LSA Honors, housing is completely random, so you don’t need to worry about picking based on fit, since it’s out of everyone’s hands anyway.
