University of Michigan meeting with financial aid

I was accepted into the university of Michigan’s college of engineering for industrial engineering. However, I have not received any merit scholarships. I don’t have the best stats (32 ACT 3.9 UW GPA) but i am meeting with the financial aid director on monday. It is financially impossible for my parents and I to pay $60k each year for 4 years, but Michigan is my top choice and I want to go here extremely badly, but I don’t want to be drowning in debt for 20 years after college.

I am meeting with the financial aid director in hopes of them offering me a scholarship or some aid. Any tips on what I should say to them to get aid/will they offer me anything?

The financial aid office typically deals with need based aid. The admissions folks deal with merit aid.

To be honest…give it a whirl! But…your stats are not tippy top for Michigan engineering…so a merit award is not likely going to happen. They are highly competitive for OOS students. HIGHLY.

In terms of need based aid…did you file a fafsa and Profile? Does your family HAVE financial need? MIchigan does not guarantee to meet the need of OOS students so you might get some need based aid if they feel you qualify…but not $60,000 worth.

How much are you hoping to get?

$20,000 would be ideal but thats a stretch. $15k would be good, my family filed a fafsa and did not qualify for anything need based besides a loan. we did not qualify for a css profile.

What do you mean you did not “qualify for a CSS Profile”?

The Profile is a required financial aid application form submitted to Michigan for consideration of need based aid.

If your family did not qualify for need based aid at all, it’s not likely the financial aid office is going to offer you any.

In terms of merit aid. Good luck. Michigan has very few highly competitive merit scholarships for OOS students. Very competitive. And not very many of them anymore.

Michigan is a great school…but really…isn’t there a more affordable instate option in YOUR state? If all you want from Michigan is $20,000, then you are saying your family will pay $40,000 a year. That will cover most instate public university options…and engineering is offered at almost, every flagship school. I know they don’t all, offer industrial engineering… it really…I’m betting you could, get the courses you need for your career aspirations.
