University of Michigan - OOS

Hello! I have applied and been rejected from Duke University (Legacy and ED, very disappointing) and have applied and been accepted to IU (safety, with Direct Admit to Kelley). Now, in order to keep my options open, and attempt to salvage my ego a little bit, I am applying to University of Michigan.

I attend a top public High School in Ohio. (Many students accepted to University of Michigan, few attend, if that makes a difference)

GPA: 3.8 (Weighted, unweighted unknown)

ACT: Composite: 31
Best Subsection Results:
Math: 32
English: 34
Reading: 31
Science: 27
Writing: 12

AP Classes Taken (including senior year)

Sophomore Year:
American History

Junior Year:
European History
English Literature and Composition
Statistics

Senior Year:
French
Psychology
Calculus BC
Physics 2
English Language and Composition
Micro/Macro Economics

As far as my course load goes, I take classes I am interested in and seek to learn the most I can, I don't try to pad my application with difficult classes. I take classes to learn, and I have built my schedule with that in mind.

Essays:

Common Application Essay: Very Good

Supplementals: Still in progress, should be good once revised/edited

Extracurriculars:

Server At Retirement Home for 2 years. Three to four days a week, after school, for 3.5-4 hour shifts.

Youth Group (4 years): Served as specific vice president for two terms, president for one. Coordinated a 4 day long convention with over 150 teens. If I had to pick one activity which defined my high school career, it would be this one. Always prevalent, always things to do. Culminating with running the convention. Altogether a great experience.

Boy Scouts of America (for life): Very close to eagle, Eagle Project planned and approved, only waiting for weather to get warmer so we can begin construction. Served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for 2 terms, attended Philmont in 2011.

French Club (4 years): Served on Board of Directors my Junior year.

Lobbied in Washington DC: Went for a weekend through my synagogue to learn about then lobby for issues important to the Reform Jewish movement.

Awards and Distinctions:

National Honor Society: Senior Year
National French Honor Society: Freshman and Senior Year
AP Scholar with Honor Award: Senior Year

I think that is about it, if I am missing anything, feel free to let me know and I will supply any more necessary information. Thanks for the chances! I will chance back, but I don't really know how valuable my information will be because if I could do it well, I would probably just chance myself. Nonetheless, I'll do my best. Cheers!

EDIT: Something I forgot to mention, after I apply, I will be writing an email to the admissions officer thanking them for the opportunity and further expressing my interest. Clearly won't make a huge difference, but it couldn't hurt either.

I am going to shamelessly bump this, but I’ll also add some more information if it would explain anymore!

My grades have an upwards trend, sophomore year was the worst by far, I didn’t apply myself, and it shows. It’s all uphill from there.

Also, presently I am in the top 20% of my school

UMI Ross: Match

Thank you! If it isn’t any trouble, what about for University of Virginia? And when you say for Ross, do you mean preadmit? Since I had always believed that to be a tiny bit more difficult than LSA…

I don’t know… 3.8 weighted could mean literally anything. 3.8 UW is the average for U mich.
Your grades should be primarily all A’s with maybe one or two B’s a year. My unweighted is 3.3 and weighted is 4.0, but it is low for U Mich even though I’m applying. Hoping my 1550/1600 SAT helps, but U Mich cares about unweighted GPA the most.

My wrong.

UMI Ross: High match
UVA: Reach

I have had one B last year, the rest As, and no Bs this year. Freshman year I believe I had one B, the rest As. Unfortunately my sophomore year was a little rough. I probably had three or four Bs. No Cs. But still, not a fantastic year academically…

For clarification, this is for UMich LSA. I would apply for Ross after my freshman year.

Okay, so not Ross Preferred. I agree with the struggle with your GPA. I know many with 33 ACTs and 3.8 UW that were deferred. I think you have a shot, like Catria says, it’s a high match. UVa OOS is very difficult regular admissions time, so it’s a reach.

I most likely will not be applying to UVA.

And thanks for your help guys. I will definitely be applying and come decision time, I’ll be back and let you guys know if some schmuck from Ohio will be attending UMich next year. Cheers.

I think Michigan is probably a yes but Ross pre-admit a no. That means you’ll need to excel as a freshman in the intro classes and apply at the end of freshman year. Also Michigan is very cheap with financial aid to OOS applicants, so make sure you can afford the costs.

I’d consider Indiana - Bloomington. The Kelley School is very good and I think you’d be a pre-admit.

@Vinceh. He said he already was accepted to IU Kelley!

That is true. HoosierPotential as well.

Just an update for any of you wanting another story to compare to. I was wait-listed. Very disappointed at first, but oh well. I know people with perfect GPAs and 34’s on the ACT who were also wait listed, which really speaks for the quality of the applicants this year. Either way, I am not hugely disappointed, maybe it’s for the best. Oh well, IU it is!
