Hi All,
I am an incoming freshman at UMich and just registered for online orientation. I had a question about the math placement test, though. I am coming in with lots of math credits (I got a 5 on the AP BC Calc test and took classes at a local college that have been approved by UMich for transfer). I heard that the UMich placement test only goes up to Pre-Calc. Does this mean that my credits can overrule what I score on the test? Sorry if this is a dumb question but how else would any of us test into Calc 2 or above. I’m a math major by the way if that helps.
You will sit down with your advisor and review your AP scores and all your placement tests (math, chem, language) and they will decide what math to place you in as a freshman. If you score well on your math placement exam and have a 5 on your AP BC exam, then they’ll probably place you in Calc 3 or MV Calc.
Even without knowing your local college courses, IMO, they’ll probably still make you take Diff Eq and Linear Algebra. But not sure.
Talk to your advisor now and ask. Engineering and math majors don’t always follow the same path. Michigan likes you to take “their” math. It’s hard so good luck. https://lsa.umich.edu/lsa/academics/majors-minors/mathematics-major.html
