University of Michigan ranked 18 world wide?

According to: World's Best Colleges and Universities: Top 200 - US News and World Report

The University of Michigan- Ann Arbor is ranked 18 world wide. I'm also surprise by this usnews ranking, due to alot of changes on which US university is ranked before another. Like University of Michigan- Ann Arbor is placed before UCLA, University of Chicago is placed before Princeton.... CAlTECH before MasTECH... thought it was interesting.

These rankings are awful. Berkeley 36th??

Yeah, Berkeley has a perfect score on the three somewhat meaningful categories, but low scores on the three worthless ones. Foreign universities get ridiculously overrated because of the international student/faculty ratios. These rankings are fairly worthless, like most things US news does.

Michigan ranked 18th worldwide makes sense. It is definitely one of the top 20 universities (overall) in the World. I definitely don't think ranking Michigan bove UCLA is strange. But the ranking itself makes little sense. Cal should be ranked much higher. Stanford should be ranked much higher. Then again, what do you expect from a World ranking? It is difficult enough to compare universities within one country, imagine a ranking of universities all over the world! Different systems, different standards, different administrative setups etc...

I don't find it strange at all the U-M is ranked higher than UCLA. This is an overall ranking for the university, not just undergrad.

I was also surprise to see Princeton University rank 12.

i really hate these debates over where umich is ranked in the u.s and the world.
bottom line imo is that michigan is a top school in the u.s. and viewed as a top school in the world. umich provides a top-notch education making their student competitive in many fields.
arguing over exactly which universities it's better (or worse) than is completely useless.

Thank goodness. Blackpen2008, I agree.
