State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public (about 360 in my graduating class)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: Eh, pretty low, including the annuity my mom gets every month it is definitely <$60,000 per year, maybe less
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): father passed away in 2011. single mother without a college degree. I moved twice during my junior year. My deceased father was actually from Michigan and UMich was his dream school so I was able to use that in my essay.
[ b]Reflection**
Strengths: SAT, rigor of courses, recommendations, ECs, essays, hooks
Weaknesses: ACT, class rank, OOS
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I hear Michigan defers many qualified OOS applicants in EA to ensure that Mich is their first choice. I think I was then accepted because I wrote a letter of continued interest expressing that Michigan is my top choice. I also raised my GPA in the first semester. I think the sentimental aspect of my situation/essays definitely helped. Michigan is all about school spirit and my first words were practically “Go Blue!” lol, so that helped I’m sure.
Where else you are applying or have already applied:
Accepted: Pitt (honors), Penn State, Boston C, Boston U (presidential scholar), Northeastern (honors and dean’s scholarship), Fordham, and Syracuse (Newhouse and Honors)
Rejected: HYP, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, UChicago, Northwestern
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I almost didn’t apply to Michigan because I heard it’s hard to not only get in OOS, but also to get any money! I applied just as a tribute to my father, but was thrilled to get in after being deferred. Future applicants: Don’t be discouraged if you are deferred! Keep your grades up, write a great letter saying Michigan is your dream school, and see if it’s meant to be. As a deferred EA applicant, I was sure I would get no scholarship money. I was shocked to find out I’m a Presidential Scholar! That’s great, but it still wasn’t enough for me to go without being buried in debt after graduation. At an admitted student reception in Manhattan, my mother and I met a financial aid counselor who gave us his info to send our remaining documents. My mom explained our situation to him, and he was very nice and professional. Found out today that I received an additional grant for $19,400!!! I am absolutely ecstatic! I never though an OOS student who was deferred could receive such generous aid and scholarships, but I was wrong. If Michigan, or any other school, is your dream, go for it! I didn’t think Michigan would ever be an option because of price and lack of aid, but now it is my most affordable option! Everything will fall into place, all you have to do is put yourself out there #GOBLUE
