I’m pretty excited that I got into my dream school; however, I’m not excited with the price of school. Rather than complain about this, I’ve been working my butt off to apply to scholarships wherever I can. I really do need them. Does anyone have any suggestions on scholarships that I can apply for? I’ve applied to many like the Bell Scholarship, but I haven’t heard anything back. If there’s any assistance anyone can provide, I’ll be extremely grateful. One more thing, I did raise my ACT score from when I applied to a 31. I saw someone say that you can be awarded merit awards directly from a school, but is it worth it with a school like Michigan and their top applicants? I figured kids with 34-36 would get merit awards. I also have a 3.97 GPA and have a ton of EC’s. I’m Indian as well. I want to pursue cardiology. Thanks for your help!
At UMich, ACT 31 would not get you any merit aid. Bell is also very competitive and I know one of the winner last year who has 2300+ in SAT. Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? Are you from in state? Did you check their NPC to see if it is really affordable to you?
I figured. My GPA is unweighted, since my school doesn’t like 5.0 grading scales for some odd reason. I’m in state, and it will be affordable if I take out student loans.
@billcsho are you attending Michigan or are you an alumni? You seem to know an awful lot of information on the school. I would love to get into depth with it, as I’m figuring out my plan to get into graduate school.
@jpdaman11 I did my postdoc there many years ago and I used to live on campus for a few years. My D went to the top feeder high school in town and is now a freshmen in CoE. In addition, I have a lot of interactions with students there in the past 16 years too. Since you are from in state, they will meet your need. When we did the NPC last year, it showed some loan and workstudy on it but they replaced them with grant in the final FA package. So even you may not get a merit scholarship, you still may be able to get some grant.

Borrow as little as possible since you want to go to med school.
@vocal1046 The only way a freshman student could borrow more than $5,500 in federal subsidized/unsubsidized loans is if the parents apply for the PLUS loan and are denied, allowing for a loan increase. If the student is a junior or a senior, they can borrow $7,500.
I see. The loans listed are “Perkins Loan” and “Subsidized Direct Loan”. Neither indicates who the borrower would be. One is less than $4K. The other is less than $5K
The student can take $5500 in Direct Loans. In addition, the student can be awarded a Perkins Loan. Vocal…your kid likely got a $2500 Perkins in addition to the $5500 Direct Loan.
No. Direct is the smaller of the two and under $4K. Must have to do with demonstrated need. Here’s another question: Does the FAFSA EFC include kids’ loans and work study?
