University of Michigan SMTD Admissions Class of 2020

SMTD does not really follow any schedule for admission announcement. A couple years ago, my friend’s son got the admission and scholarship notice on April 30 by email directly. It was not updated on WA until a week later.

On the website, they said “late February to early March”. Hoping piano performance decisions come out soon!

April 30th?!?! Aaaaaaahhhhhhh nooooo. I see you said admission AND scholarship, so I guess that’s a different case than those of us just waiting for scholarship info. But still, I agree that they don’t seem to follow a predictable schedule as much a other schools might.

I’ve been accepted into the BM program for Vocal Performance!!!

Congrats! Did you get an email or just see it on the portal??

Both, actually! I decided to check WA first and I found out! Then about a few hours later, an email showed up.

Did any accepted students actually apply for the Telluride scholarship?

Haven’t gotten mine yet… I applied as a theatre performance (acting) major, so when would a good time be to be worried/ask admissions via email or call etc??

@theatregirl2020 I guess I wouldn’t be too concerned until late March, but if you want to ask, it probably won’t hurt. I did that regarding a different application (not Michigan)–I just emailed the music school’s admissions office and asked when my daughter might expect to receive a decision, and I got a personalized answer.

Just got accepted to the BMA for piano performance!

WOW @etsy98 !!! Congratulations!!

Anyone know how and when studio assignments are made n Vocal Performance (BM)? Do they honor your requests?

@songbirdmama I think the studio will send an email to you personally. I received an email from my preferred studio/vocal coach a week after I got my decision. Response speed from studios varies by the competitiveness of you studio preference, though, I suspect.

has anyone who applied as a BTA major heard anything yet??

@Darkus102938 She is going back for lessons with the three studios of interest before Easter. If need be, should she express any changes in preference to the faculty directly or to music admissions?

Is there any potential for hurt feelings or bruised egos when changing order of preference after sample lessons? I find this issue to be the stickiest one to deal with – I don’t really understand how to navigate this.

I feel that you have think what’s most important. You want your son/daughter to be happy and excited about the teacher he or she is studying with. Spending the next four years with someone they’re not 100% sure about could be a disaster. It’s better to change now than later (technically she has not started yet). Once you start with one teacher, it’s almost impossible to change to another studio. This has happened to our own piano teacher and someone we know who just graduated last year. The whole time she was studying with her professor, she hated it. She thought about changing her teacher, but it would have been a big deal and was discouraged to do so. So, if you think someone’s feelings might be hurt, I am sure they will get over it in a hurry. What’s more important is that your child is happy and comfortable with the professor. Just my opinion.

Choosing a teacher is so difficult! I think you can get a gut instinct in one lesson but it still feels like a gamble whether it will be a good fit for four years. Still, I hope we get studio placements sooner rather than later… I was told over the phone that it would be during the summer but others have heard that we will hear in March. Fingers crossed that it is March.

Also, has anyone received FA info for SMTD? This wait is agonizing.

Well I got my official FA stuff but I applied as a double majoring student so I don’t know if that counts. I’m waiting for merit scholarship decisions

Thanks @Apso555 – know you’re right, but like @sopranosings says it’s hard to make an informed decision on short notice. I see clearly now (hindsight is 20/20) how important it is to start getting trial lessons in the Junior year of high school when the stakes are much lower!

@XxMU51CxX do you mean official as in a paper copy that was mailed to you? Maybe that is from the other major, then, because my D has nothing on WA or paper yet.
