Hello everyone!
Currently, I am deciding between UMichigan, UNC, and University of IL at Urbana Champaign. I plan to major in Finance. I recently found out that I was rejected from Ross School of Business (UMich). At UIUC I was admitted into a selective business honors program. And, at UNC I applied RD so I was not able to receive a Excel@Carolina invite. I don’t know much about UNC, so what are your thoughts about the school? Is it easy to transfer to the Business School Sophomore year? Also, how is the social life? I am looking for a diverse campus! Which school would you choose?
You don’t transfer to the B-school, you apply your sophomore or junior year. They take about 50% of the applicants.
The social scene is great here–there really is something for everyone.
Pick whichever you feel most home at. I will say, though, that Kenan Flagler is one of the best b schools in the country.
Congratulations on your admissions! They are all great schools but UM and UNC are at another level. Overall I would give a slight edge to UM but very slight. Chapel Hill is one of the oldest universities in the country, way older than Michigan, and has always remained high in the rankings unlike Michigan that has been get hammered.
The fact you didn’t get into the business school at Michigan makes the decision a no brainier.
BTW, I went to Maryland for undergrad and Duke for grad and can objectively say I would go for UNC. Good luck with your decision.
to be admitted to KF, you have to perform well in the prerequisites and, ideally, demonstrate leadership on campus. also, most OOS students i’ve known have been admitted, but in the case you’re not the first try, then you’re able to attend a session with somebody in admissions and they’ll tell you what you need to do to improve your application. many times if you complete their suggestions, you’ll be admitted.
regarding finance, as i’m sure you know - the best of the best come to UNC to recruit, from Goldman to McKinsey, and the alumni connections are strong.
the social life is great. the campus is beautiful. the students are intelligent, yet down-to-earth.
for me, UNC epitomizes the ideal college experience- quintessential college town, world-class academics, beautiful campus, and top-notch athletics (which I understand many do not care for).
@Notorious8893 What is the backup plan for those who don’t get admitted to KF? Just wondering…
@Foreverindia - many students pursue economics degrees. also, as an undergraduate, you are able to take classes in the business school. so, if you do not get in, but still want to work in finance, you can - you would major in economics and then take accounting and finance in the business school. also, some students add a math major. however, one perk of the econ major is that it’s a short sequence (7 courses), so you definitely have time to double major. some do econ and psychology, econ and history, econ and sociology, etc. there are many different combinations.
