@PurpleTitan UM explained it to me as I will be out of Michigan for more than three months consecutively. Their undergrad admissions office seemed a bit unsure how to handle a gap year applicant, which worries me a bit. They said they haven’t seen someone apply intending to take a gap year. Seems strange to me

University of Toronto is the better option because you seem to want a big city experience as well as a change from Ann Arbor.
However, if you do qualify for in-state tuition rate at Michigan, and Michigan is significantly lower regarding COA, then Michigan might be the wiser choice for one planning on grad school.
