University of Michigan

I was just deferred from the university of Michigan and I am OOS. What percent of these students are typically accepted? When do these decisions usually come out?

No idea, I got deferred too… I heard there are different deferral letters that could possibly indicate different consideration?

they defer most early applicants, rarely deny, also everybody should have gotten the same letter

My daughter just got in last night!!! After her deferral from Tulane we are THRILLED!!!

@sanmateopats UMich sends different deferral letters. I supposedly received the “good” letter, but who knows what it means.

What indicates a “good letter” vs a “bad letter”?

The different versions of deferral letters have been discussed every year. Don’t waste your time in the speculation. Try to improve your score or GPA instead.

@billcsho at this late juncture i think it’s too late to improve one’s score or gpa. The only thing deferred applicants can do is submit strong fall semester senior year grades and send a letter or call the admission rep for the area where his or high school is located and reiterate strong interest–or better yet, state he or she will definitely attend (but only if seriously meant) if admitted. But this will only work if the student’s overall application is stellar and stats are typically within the range of acceptance.

@trackmbe3 It is not too late to improve test score. One can still take the January test and prep thoroughly over the holidays. Of course, if you are a couple hundred points short in SAT or a few points in ACT, it is unlikely to make the jump in two weeks. If you are already around the 25th percentile, you can certainly raise your score to the median range to improve the chance.

I don’t have the highest test scores (32 ACT and 2040 SAT) but I do have a 4.0 GPA. Thanks for the advice, I’m hoping for the best!

Wait I haven’t got a letter yet…when should they have been received?

@quinnmquinn The official admission letter will come later. The first notification is by e-mail or you can check on WA. The EA announcement is not done yet.

Thank you! I’ll check the WA because I haven’t received an email.

@obligatoryname What are the “good” and “bad” letters? @student1227 I was deferred as an OOS applicant as well. I’m not sure what I can do at this point – my scores/grades are pretty good (2380 SAT, 4.0 GPA unweighted, 4.89 weighted, class rank 1) and my ECs are solid. I sort of expected an admit (although I do not in any way feel entitled to one). Last year, a very qualified kid from my school was deferred as well (he ended up going to Penn under the uber-competitive M&T program). Does anyone have suggestions on what I should do, if anything?

@theleenbean The “good” letter says that strong first semester grades may help you. The other says that they will not review your application until after the February deadline.

@obligatoryname seriously??

@obligatoryname It’s still a possibility but my one friend got the “good” letter and she had a 25 ACT score.

I’m not coming up with this, I just read about the supposedly good and bad versions from other people. I have no idea if it’s true.

You will get accepted no prob. Please chance me! http://■■■■■■■.com/CHANCEMEyay

From the past years, there were students accepted after receiving the so called bad deferral letter. There were obviously rejections of those received “good” letter.
