University of Michigan

Anyone know what’s the lowest GPA Umichigan Ann Arbor accept in the most recent 5 years?

University of Michigan has a really good football team. It is generally speculated that very talented athletes can get in to many schools with lower GPA than other students. If you are a very talented football player, to the extent that the U. Michigan scouts or coaches have already contacted you, then they can tell you the information.

Otherwise you might want to know the lowest GPA for an unhooked non-athlete to U.Michigan.

It does not matter what the lowest GPA got admitted. It s what your GPA in the context of your school that matters. We know the admission GPA is not really in a normal distribution. Around 20% of enrolled freshmen had GPA 4.0 in high school and the average is 3.87. As they consider GPA to be one of the most important factor, so it will be difficult to be admitted with GPA significantly below the average unless you are recruited, applying to schools that are not heavily based on academic stat, or if your high school has very tough grading scale.

@billcsho is my high school ranking high helps? (my high school is public school)

Class rank itself is not considered at UMich, however, it helps to indicate the toughness of your school grading scale.

@billcsho here is more complete story of mine: I’m currently a senior right now, I’m OOS and UM is my dream of the dream school. But UM is a high reach for me. The reason why is because that I moved to U.S from other country when I was freshmen and I have no idea about any single English at all, I took ESL for my first year back then but I don’t think is really helpful to me so I rather take some other elective class that’s more meaningful. My first two years of high school is really tough to me, since I don’t even know when we are having tests, essays are due… (believe or not, is that terrible since I don’t understand anything and the reacher barely understand what I’m trying to say… but I still maintain an acceptable grades. When I was junior, I found out UM is my dream of the dream school and I’m wondering what kind of perspective UM will look towards student like me? Did UM LSA accept any low GPA students (non-athlete) under certain circumstances? And is undeclared going to increase my admission chance or not? Did anyone know what’s LSA EA acceptance rate ?

What is your test score? How about your junior year GPA? What is your TOEFL score? Note that they want to admit students that would succeed in college. Do you have any hook? Just think if you have anything that may help you to overcome your weakness in GPA. GPA is one of the most important factors, but not the only factor, in UM admission. But when it is too low, it would be very hard to fight the uphill battle. I know an in-state student with GPA 3.8 and ACT 33 got rejected from CoE a few years ago.

my test score is 1400 for the new SAT and I’m taking TOEFL after weeks. I’m not looking for CoE, since I’m not a stem person AT ALL, I’m more social science person. Do you have any idea what’s the average GPA of LSA? For my GPA, yes it’s low for the first two years but I have a significant upward trend. My first two years was around 3.2, but in my junior year is 4.05 on our school’s unweighted scale and I believe my senior would be even better. I’m trying very hard to overcome my language struggle, because I barely understand anything during class back then and it’s always been a tough road for me to overcome (I’m including how I overcome in my essay as well). But I’m not sure did they actually use GPA that important or not…

and btw, did you @billcsho go to UMichigan?

I used to work there and my D1 is a senior there. The average GPA for admission is 3.87 for the whole UMICH while LSA is the biggest portion in it. You need to recalculate your GPA, there is no way you get an uwGPA above 4.0. Your current SAT is also below admission average. If you really to go to UMICH, transferring would be a more reasonable approach.

For the new SAT, I got 1400/1600 so I think is not that bad compare to the average. The things that’s going to hurt me the most is GPA.
And what D1 means?
Yes, I’m thinking to transfer to UM if I got reject this fall since UM is my dream school and I know I will go to UM sooner or later in my life (even for graduate school, since that’s the highest education that I’m looking for)

Also, is good recs and essays going to help a lot?

They helps but not a lot. SAT 1400 is just a little bit below admission average. Your OOS status and GPA may be your bigger problem.
