University of Minnesota Twin Cities (UMTC)

Hello. First, can I say I am astounded by the lack of information about this school… Most things I see are UMTC vs. UWM. Which is understandable (I love Madison, I just will never be able to afford it). I’m hoping to be able to afford UMTC.

Can anyone offer me any information about OOS scholarship opportunities at UMTC?

A little information about my stats/situation:

Currently a HS junior
- Kinda. I studied abroad for most of my junior year, I returned at the beginning of the

last nine weeks of junior year. I am
currently attending HS, in semester-length elective courses, getting semester credits
for them. These are the only courses I am being allowed to take.
GPA: 3.7 (?)
- I’m not entirely sure what the exact GPA is. However, my GPA will go up with the courses I am taking now. A lot was
going on with my family, and I began playing an after school sport and wouldn’t get home until 9-10 PM every night
during my second semester, and so my GPA suffered. My GPA will also increase during senior year. I also got B’s in two
high school courses I took in eighth grade because I was young and stupid.
ACT Composite: 30
- Reading is a 35, and Science was a 33. Math is my low point on the ACT, though I always get good grades in math
classes I take. My English is a 28. Math is 23. I am working to improve.
Credits/Classes I have taken.
- English: Pre-AP English for freshman and sophomore year.
- Math: Pre-AP Algebra 1, Pre-AP Algebra 2, Pre-AP Geometry (Advanced scores on

EOC’s for Algebra 1 and Geometry (no EOC for Algebra 2))
-Art: Intro to Art (though invited to skip ahead to Drawing One) and Drawing Two
(invited to skip Drawing One). I have been invited to take AP Art, though I do not

plan to take it.
- Social Studies: Pre-AP Civics/Econ, AP World History (received a 4 on the AP
exam, invited to take AP European History-a small, invite-only course held in high
esteem).
- Science: Pre-AP Physical Science, Pre-AP Biology, and Pre-AP Chemistry
(Advanced on Biology EOC, no EOC for others).

  • Foreign Language: Spanish for two years (didn’t learn anything year two, decided to drop it). I also speak Italian.
    • Others: Oral Communications (received 89.43%, because the teacher disliked me
since I differed with her political views and was outspoken about them in my
speeches. If I had gotten a 89.5% it would have been rounded to an A). PE/Health.
Computer Business Applications. This year, my classes (that I am only taking for a
nine weeks but am getting semester credits for) are Photography, Psychology,
Advanced Database, Journalism, Sociology, and Advanced Spreadsheets.
      Senior Year Course Plan
    • AP English Composition, and AP Literature (my schools English 3 and 4).
    • AP US History, and AP European History.
    • AP Statistics (I plan not to do Pre-Calculus because I fear I will do poorly after being
removed from math for a year).
    • AP Chemistry and AP Biology (no AP Physics, it is incredibly difficult at my school).
    • Internship, I will intern at a hospital.
      Extracurricular Activities
    • 250 volunteer hours at a special needs camp, working weekends and the summer. I plan to work there again this summer and next.
    • Studied abroad for a year in Italy with Rotary.
    • National Honors Society, Junior Civitan, FBLA, and I will be in Science National Honors Society, GSA. I hope to start a ASL club and join one of the cultural clubs, as well as be in my principal’s exclusive cabinet where you volunteer and such.
    • Played soccer sophomore year, I’ve played since I was a kid. I am still on the team but
do not play since I just got back.
    • I did an independent research project on deaf/hearing students and compensation of
senses. I will conduct another project next year.

I want to study American Sign Language and Biochemistry (in that realm) as I want to go to medical school.
I haven’t taken the PSAT so I don’t know if I would be National Merit. I wouldn’t get the scores by the application due date anyways.

I probably am in the top 10 percent of my class, but my class is huge, we have around 800 in my class right now I believe.

Do you think there is any way I could get anything close to a full ride from UMTC? Especially since I am OOS and not National Merit?
I’m from a no name state in the south that doesn’t offer the courses I need :frowning: I’m so worried. My parents and I can’t pay for my college. My only other options are Oklahoma State, and Purdue, and Madison really.

Anything?

Thanks in advance if you read all this…

You couldn’t read through this? http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/costsaid/schol_campus.html

UMTC is a public U and few of those offer much merit aid to OOS students. I really doubt Purdue will work for you either. They don’t tend to offer much to OOS students either. What state are you from that doesn’t offer ASL and/or Biochem?

Have you seen anything on the UM website that indicates they have a full-scholarship program for OOS students? Such programs, where they exist, are going to be documented on the schools’ websites.
http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/costsaid/scholarships.html

There are state universities that offer full-ride or full-tuition scholarships to OOS students, University of Alabama for example.

I have read through it. However, there are a lot of scholarships that just say “amount varies” without any criteria listed. I haven’t seen anyone mention getting those scholarships, I was just wondering. I’m from a state in the south that nobody international seems to pronounce right. Very few colleges offer ASL.

Generally the lower the list goes the lower the amount will be. The Gold Scholar and Presidential awards top out at $10K/year. That’s about all you can hope for (or the Gold National which will only cover the OOS differential). I don’t see that UMTC offers ASL

You would likely get very little, if anything from those schools.

Why do you have Ok State on your list?

How much can your family pay each year for college?

If you need a full ride or close to a full ride, then you need a totally different list.

What southern state can’t int’ls pronounce right?? Mississippi??

How serious are you in this regards?

@mom2collegekids: Arkansas?
Definitely not phonetic.

well, you answered the most UNIMPORTANT question. Can you please answer the relevant questions so we can help you with a credible list so you won’t end up will only unaffordable schools?

You need to retest AND take both the ACT and SAT. Obviously, you need to practice the math section since it is tanking your composite.

I have a child in med school, so I think I can help you with figuring out the best strategy to get there, if that’s your true goal.

UWM is UW-Milwaukee.

UW-Madison is UW.
