Everyone, I am really having a hard time choosing between the two university. Your help will be really appreciated. I am an international applicant and got accepted to both universities.
In University of Minnesota I got accepted to College of Engineering and received the Maroon Global Excellence award (about $4000 yearly).
In Northeastern University I got accepted to Electrical Engineering as well as the Honor’s Program. I also received a scholarship of $15,000 yearly. I am planning to do the 4 year 2 co-op program so that tuition of two semesters are saved.
Please let me know which one should be the better choice, with reasons, among the two.
Well, ranking-wise (using US News) Minnesota is ranked 22nd, and NEU 51st, in undergraduate engineering.
Tuition-wise you would pay a lot less for Minnesota as well (approx. $17,000 after scholarship compared to $28,000’ish, though tuition and fees might be higher for international students). And then you are in NEU for 4 years or 5, due to the co-op? Minnesota guarantees a 4 year curriculum. You would have valuable co-op experience from NEU so you’d need to check to see what comparable opportunities there are for internships, etc. at Minnesota.
Northeastern is a LOT smaller, it’s private, it’s becoming more selective (aggressively so), it’s located in Boston as opposed to Minneapolis . . . those are intangible aspects of the two universities that you would need to look at as well.
Congratulations on having two excellent institutions from which to choose!
. IMO the NE offer is so low as to take it out of contention unless you have money to burn. We turned down NE as soon as we saw the merit offer though. I also like (as a parent) the UMinn 4 yr guarantee plus the over 13 credit tuition thing, NE is not saving you anyting with a co op, it is adding at least that time back to your degree as delayed graduation. Obviously this is the issue with co ops, if you use the co op money to pay as you go then you could use that as a plus but the math is pretty clear if U minn is 26K a yr (@) Vs NE @45K.
@Mamelot Thank you so much for the information. Really appreciate it…There are a lot of factors to consider…
@Alfonsia Could you elaborate on the 13 credit tuition thing? Also, I am really confused about the Co-op thing…Is it possible to graduate in 4 years with 2 Co-ops? And if it is possible it means I am saving 2 semester, that is one year, tuition, right?
@mapleccc Hahaha! Yeah…You were right all along i guess…
Uminn has a 13 credit policy, you pay a flat rate for the 13 credits and nothing more than that. So if you take 15 credits, you save money.
I suggest you go over to NE website and forum to talk about the co ops, search in CC for older threads.
