Essentially a waitlist is there as a backup if the school doesn’t hit enrollment targets. Some years they pull 50-100 from the wait list. Some years, none. It just depends on their yield. (I have two daughters attending/attended. Neither of their years was anyone pulled from the waitlist.) Usually, you won’t hear anything until after May 1, so you will have to deposit elsewhere. Should you get off this or any other waitlist and decide to attend, you will forfeit the deposit you paid to the school you originally committed to attending.
I got into the Holy Cross Gateway Program, does anyone know what this means? im very confused
Hi! I am a current freshman at ND! I have friends in the gateway program. It means that you will attend one year at Holy Cross, which is across the street. I believe you get to take at least one class at ND. If you maintain a 3.5 GPA, you are automatically accepted to attend ND the next year! You still get to go to all ND club events and football games (I think
@shea16, there are threads in this ND forum about Gateway. You do your first year at Holy Cross, and if your grades are good (don’t remember details) you are transferred over to ND as a sophomore.
Shea – use the search function and you’ll find lots of discussion about the Gateway program.
But the TLDR version is, you attend Holy Cross College across the street for frosh year. If you don’t get arrested, there’s like a 95% chance you’ll be attending attend ND as a soph. Kind of like a pre-approved transfer student. Something like 60-70 kids a year do Gateway.
Another thing for all waitlisted students, one thing you can do is write a letter about why you want to go to Notre Dame and email it to your admissions counselor. After being deferred, I literally wrote a 6 page letter about why I wanted to go to Notre Dame and how I considered myself a perfect fit pointing out specific programs and clubs, which ultimately didn’t hurt because I got in RD and I believe it really put me over the edge to being accepted.
@shea16 You can get more information on the Gateway Program here https://admissions.nd.edu/waitlist-gateway/
It’s a transfer program with Holy Cross College. You can also find out more on the CC thread here: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-notre-dame/2059882-university-of-notre-dame-gateway-class-of-2022.html#latest
Congratulations! It sounds like a great opportunity if you decide to accept.
Hi guys! I am a freshman at ND who was admitted off of the waitlist last year. I have created a thread for the students who were waitlisted for the class of 2022: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/2066048-notre-dame-waitlist-2022.html#latest
Congratulations to everyone who was accepted into ND or the HCC Gateway program! If you weren’t accepted or waitlisted, remember that this decision does not define you and you are still your wonderful self.
Go Irish!
ACCEPTED!!!
Accepted after being deferred EA…wrote a letter and made sure to update them with anything positive and new in my life. To all who got in…chances are I’ll be seeing you in the fall!
To all who didn’t, know that it’s truly not a huge deal. Anyone who was a reasonable candidate for ND in the first place will succeed no matter where they go…keep your head up!

Crud, I got waitlisted. They said I should accept a spot only if I really want to attend. I would love to go to ND, but I don’t know if it’s my number one choice as of now. Should I accept the spot? Would they be mad if I get accepted and then choose to not attend? Thanks.

Extra info:
I am an English student from London, my parents were educated here so have basically been clueless to the whole application system. Decided to apply to the U.S. 6 months ago and am so glad I did. The college experience looks amazing. I first heard of ND when they came to speak at my school but had not realised how popular it was. Looks great.
