@galacticpepe I’m applying to Ivies, Duke, Northwestern, Boston College, NYU
@galacticpepe I’m applying to Stanford, Northwestern, NYU, Northeastern, UC’s, Tufts, and maybe UChicago.
I’m doing UC’s, Stanford, NYU, Chicago, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, and Delaware. Already applied to Michigan early waiting to hear back from them
hey peeps, i hope you guys are more prepared for this wait than i am! i’d say it’s a pretty big accomplishment in itself that we got deferred instead of rejected-there is still hope! i wish everyone luck with finishing up RD apps
@ariley524 hey! I totally agree although it’s still a bummer that we have to keep working.
Done crying my eyes out finally. Did some calculations and realized we are a pretty lucky bunch for not being straight out rejected. So ready to give it my all for the RD round now (for all schools, even though Penn still has my heart).
Does anyone know how many of us were deferred?
@vsorhegui I saw somewhere online that around 20% of applicants get deferred…but that’s from memory and I’m not sure if the source is reputable. Can anyone confirm or deny?
@doorrealthe I now 22% were accepted so does that mean 58% were rejected? I’m just curious as to how all the numbers lined up this year. And I think around 15% of the deferred get accepted in March
@vsorhegui someone in the ED discussion thread posted this:
“someone asked how many early decision applicants to Penn were deferred - based on deduction I am fairly sure it was around 1200…Last year 171 students who were deferred ultimately got accepted and we were told that approximately 14% of students deferred are accepted so 14% of 1200 is about 171…Therefore, almost the same number who were admitted 1300+ were deferred 1200…This leaves about 4000 students that were rejected”
So I think saying that 20% were deferred is a good guess.
Hey guys,
How does the “deferral update process” work? Does anyone have any idea what I should include, or perhaps offer any sort of tip(s)? Would it be a good idea to reach out to my regional rep/interviewer? Feel free to PM me as that’s a lot easier for me to check and respond.
Keep in mind that you are all fantastic students and I know we’ll end up somewhere great for us. Thank you!
Word of advice from a current Penn student who was admitted after being deferred: Wait a few weeks (maybe till mid Janurary) to send in a compelling letter with your continued interest and new relevant information (grades, accomplishments). Do not annoy your admit officer. Only send in additional recs if they will add actual new information (not just say how great you are)–don’t just send it recs if you already got two good recs. When I was deferred, I treated it as a rejection and I think that was the best way to go. I applied to all my other schools, got into a lot of them, and in the end got to decide to actually come to Penn after looking at all my choices. Bottom line: Most who are deferred get rejected, so just send the interest letter (and make it good!!! It is actually important) and work on your other apps.
@penn215215 thanks for the advice! It’s just gonna be hard writing essays for other schools since I want to go to Penn so badly and it’s been the only thing on my mind lol
@penn215215 thank you!
@penn215215 thank you so much! @galacticpepe same
Based on my calculations going off of last year’s stats, around 22% were accepted ED this year, 21% deferred, and 57% rejected.
Going by the 14% acceptance rate after deferral from last year’s stats, that would mean approximately 182 deferred applicants would be accepted this year. However, taking into account the amount of seats available (since this year slightly more seats were filled with ED applicants) and the RD acceptance rate, around 173 deferred applicants will likely be accepted this year. In other words, our chances of acceptance are lower from last year, as the amount of seats given to deferred applicants would be approximately the same this year as it was last year.
Anyone here deferred from SEAS? Seems to me we have mostly Wharton deferred peeps here
I know a student that was admitted who wrote a bunch of lies on his college application for Penn and, in addition, applied Early Decision in addition to being a Questbridge Finalist (which isn’t allowed). Is it in my place to report this?
@BigJah technically you do have the power to do so but it’s a matter if you would want to screw the other person over or not.
